‘Se7en’ Had A Sequel. You’ve Just Never Heard Of It

When it came to dark films in the ’90s, Se7en delivered some shocking moments. Over 20 years later, the film is still a major highlight in director David Fincher’s heralded career. Though there were rumors of a sequel, nothing official panned out.

Strangely enough, though, there is actually a Se7en pseudo-sequel out there. You’ve just never heard of it.

Eight Isn’t Enough

In order to keep the theme from Se7en, the sequel was originally supposed to be called Ei8ht. The film’s script was originally written by Ted Griffin, who wrote the hit 2001 film Ocean’s Eleven. In the screenplay, Morgan Freeman’s character Detective Somerset would use newly-discovered psychic powers to solve crimes.

That’s A Hard Pass

Many wanted David Fincher to be a part of the new film. Unfortunately, he had no interest in revisiting the story. In a 2005 interview with Total Film, he said he actually hated the script. “I read a script two or three years ago that they wanted to make the sequel to Se7en. They wanted Morgan to have become clairvoyant in some way and that was the way he was now solving serial-killer cases! And I was like, ‘Well, that’s handy’,” he said.

Calm Before The Storm

Scheduling was another major reason why a Se7en sequel didn’t work out. Brad Pitt’s career exploded after the 1995 film, which meant it would’ve been difficult to lure him back. As for Freeman, the Oscar-winning actor had his plate full with an endless string of movies.

Solace In Reinvention

After years of holding onto the script for Ei8ht, the studio basically scrapped it and sold it for parts. Much of the screenplay wound up in the studio’s new project, a film eventually released as the 2015 film Solace. When it came to getting some big-time talent, Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell delivered lavish performances. A key element of Ei8ht that was salvaged involved having a psychic solving crimes.

As Good As It Gets

Solace director Afonso Poyart believes this film is the closest we’ll get to a Se7en sequel. “I do not think Solace is a serial killer movie, it is only its outer layer. In the background, the film is much more than that, talking about life and death, and raises some interesting moral dilemmas,” he told Veja Sao Paulo.
