Former radio show producer Whitney Thore became a reality TV star with My Big Fat Fabulous Life, but with fame comes controversy and secrets. The TLC series follows the North Carolina native in her quest to lose weight. Unfortunately, not everything you see on screen is legit. We look at some behind-the-scenes stories surrounding the show.

A Checkered Past

Throughout most of the show, Whitney was head over heels with her boyfriend Lennie Alehat. And no, in case you were wondering, that’s not his real name. It was discovered that his real name is Nathaniel David Lee. The reason for the name change stemmed from previous run-ins with the law, including a DWI arrest in 2008.

Spam In The Place Where I Live

The show nearly didn’t happen because of a spam filter. Following her viral video, Whitney got an email from TLC inviting her to have her own show. Unfortunately, most spam emails advertising with the keyword “weight loss” get trapped in the spam folder. Whitney thoroughly checked the folder and discovered the email before deleting everything.

Dieting So Young

Whitney’s trouble with weight gain didn’t come in her adult years. It was way before My Big Fat Fabulous Life. When she was only five years old, a doctor put her on a strict diet. “Just after preschool, I was indoctrinated into diet culture,” she stated in her 2016 book I Do It With the Lights On.

Great Balls Of Fire

When Whitney mentioned that her precious cat Henchi was set on fire once, fans flipped out. Over on Facebook, she revealed that Henchi was a big fan of the heater in their South Korea apartment. One day, the cat got a bit too close and its tail caught on fire. Strangely enough, Henchi had no idea a part of him was set ablaze. “He was unaware that he was ever on fire, and to this day, remains unaffected by the event,” Whitney said.

A Planned Confrontation

When a reality show is filming, random people can walk into a scene anytime, but some interactions are completely pre-planned. The latter was the case during season three when comedian Kerryn Feehan got into a verbal scuffle with Whitney. On Reddit, Feehan revealed that producers asked her to be on the show. “Every interaction I had with Whitney was filmed, and I spoke honestly,” she said.
