Scarlett Johansson Slams Ivanka Trump

Published

Many people have seen Ivanka Trump’s role in the White House as a good thing. They thought she could influence her father to be more sympathetic to the issues that she cares about such as workplace equality and an advocate for many feminist ideals. The reality has been a bit different as the first daughter has not pushed her father as much as expected. Actress Scarlet Johansson is having none of it. She blasted Ivanka during an interview with Ariana Huffington at the Women of the World Summit in New York.

Johansson called Ivanka’s claims to be “working behind the scenes” just “baffling”. She went on to say, “You can’t have it both ways. If you take a job as a public advocate, then you must advocate publicly. It’s a unique and strange thing, but she has an opportunity to really make a big impact just by being vocal. And I have met her several times in the past, many years ago, and she’s very well-spoken and intelligent and engaging.”

Ivanka says she will be an advocate for “women’s empowerment.”

For her part, Ivanka has said that she plans to work to advance the ideas of equal pay for women and paid maternity leave, she just plans to do that behind the scenes. She claims that she will have an impact on the policies of her father’s administration, even if people outside of the White House may never know what that influence has been. This week she told Gayle King of CBS This Morning, “I think most of the impact I have, over time most people will not actually know about.”

She also said:

I think for me, what it means is that– I’ll continue the advocacy work that I was doing in the private sector– advocating for the economic empowerment of women. I’m very focused on the role of education… I’m still my father’s daughter. So to me the– this particular title was about giving critics the comfort that I’m holding myself to that highest ethical standard. But I’ll weigh in with my father on the issues I feel strongly about.

Johansson said, “This idea that behind a great man is a great woman—it’s such an old-fashioned concept.”

The actress did a skit recently on Saturday Night Live in which she criticized Ivanka Trump for being “complicit.”

Think you know why an actor exited a show? We’ll bet you didn’t even realize that some major show plots happened out of serendipity.
