‘Saved By The Bell’ Is Officially Returning With NBC Reboot

Time out! Fans of the 1990’s teen sitcom Saved by the Bell can now rejoice. We’re heading back to Bayside High School in 2020. After many rumors, NBC announced on September 17 that a Saved by the Bell reboot is officially onboard for the network’s upcoming streaming platform, Peacock. But what’s the reboot going to focus on?

The Legacy Of ‘Saved By The Bell’

When Saved by the Bell was released 30 years ago in 1989, it was an instant hit with teenagers. Viewers fell in love with Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) and Kelly Kapowski (Tiffani Thiessen), as well as their group of friends: A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez), Jessie Spano (Elizabeth Berkley), Lisa Turtle (Lark Voorhies), and Samuel “Screech” Powers (Dustin Diamond). Everyone watched the sitcom, and they rooted for Zack and Kelly to finally kiss and become a couple. Viewers shipped Zack and Kelly long before the term surfaced in pop culture.

Saved by the Bell aired for four seasons and inspired two spin-off series: Saved by the Bell: The College Years and Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Voted one of the 20 best shows about high school of all time, fans could always rely on the show to feature lighthearted comedic situations. Fans have supported the show since the ‘90s, so it shouldn’t be surprising news everyone was excited to hear that a reboot is on the way.

The Planned Plot

Lopez and Berkley have already confirmed their return to the beloved series. The official planned plot explains that the show will focus on Jessie as a mother of one and Slater as a father of three. They’re parents at Bayside High School, which means they’ll probably reunite and have the undeniable chemistry present in the original series.

In addition, California governor Zack Morris (Yes, Zack is the governor of California) is in hot water when he closes too many low-income high schools. To resolve the issue, he proposes the affected schools send students to the highest performing schools in the state, including (you guessed it) Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the overprivileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality, maybe including even Jessie and Slater.

So far, Berkley and Lopez are the only original cast members signed on to reprise their famous characters. Just because Zack Morris is mentioned on the show doesn’t mean Gosselaar is scheduled to appear on the show, which could be upsetting to some fans. Can you even imagine Saved by the Bell without Zack and Kelly? Gosselaar commented that he heard about the reboot the same time everyone else did.

“Honestly, I was never approached. I woke up to the news this morning with a kind of ‘huh’ response,” Gosselaar said. But Gosselaar would be interested in reprising the role of Zack Morris. “I’ve always been interested, of course. I believe that Tiffani (Thiessen) and I and the rest of the cast have not been approached yet. So as of right now, we’re going to watch it (the reboot) like the rest of the fans and wish them nothing but the best.”

Social Media Buzz

Once the news was announced Saved by the Bell was returning, fans immediately shared their excitement on Twitter. One user (@GPSgregorysmith) even posted a gif of Jessie famously singing “I’m so excited!” Another user (@Daisha_Riley) remarked, “The little 10 year old me is losing her mind right now.” She’s probably not alone. Finally, user (@MAD_about_style) asked the most important question: “But are he (Zack) and Kelly still married? These are things I need to know!”

NBC’s new streaming platform, Peacock, will officially launch in April 2020, with Saved by the Bell set to arrive alongside reboots of other beloved classics: Battlestar Galactica and Punky Brewster. The platform will be offered free for cable subscribers, or at a monthly charge for other users. Are you as excited as Jessie to return to Bayside High?
