San Bernardino Shooting at Elementary School Leaves Three Dead

Published

on

Approximately a year and a half after the town was the site of a terrorist attack, shots rang out again in San Bernardino, California. Today, the location was the North Park Elementary School. Cedric Anderson walked into a classroom this afternoon and shot his estranged wife, Karen Elaine Smith. Anderson said nothing as he approached Smith and opened fire in the classroom. He then turned his weapon on himself, according to Jarrod Burguan, the San Bernardino police chief.

Two students were injured in the melee. One died later at the hospital. The student who died later was eight year old Jonathan Martinez. He had been airlifted to the Loma Linda University Medical Center from the elementary school. The other child who was hurt is nine years old. The boy has been reported to be in stable condition. Anderson was not targeting the children, they were shot accidentally.

The classroom in question was a special needs class. There were 15 children who were in grades one through four. Smith was teaching the class along with two aides. Neither aide was hurt in the attack.

San Bernardino Police Lt. Michael Madden said, “This is a tragic incident that has befallen our city.” Mayor R. Carey Davis added, “Far too often in our country and throughout the world, we gather to report this news of tragic events that take place.”

The San Bernardino shooting has been compared to the Sandy Hook shooting almost five years ago.

The shooting brought immediate comparisons between the shooting that took place in December 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. On parent, Brad Hendran told CNN, “I fell to my knees and started saying our father and hail Mary’s. … I’m gonna hug her. … I’m gonna hug her. I hope she is OK.” His daughter is in the second grade at the school.

The school will be closed for at least the next few days.
