The ‘Roseanne’ Episode That Nearly Featured A Very Dark Storyline

If you haven’t been watching the (recently canceled) Roseanne revival, you’ve missed one of the most talked about programs of recent years. While the latest season has been tackling current issues, one planned episode got shut down hard.

Kids With Guns

Showrunner Whitney Cummings revealed plans to do an episode surrounding the issue of gun control. This story was pitched before the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. The episode was set to revolve around D.J.’s daughter Mary finding the Conners’ gun.

ABC

“She was gonna come out and be holding it, and it made everyone very uncomfortable, which is why I wanted to do it. I thought for a multi-cam, this could be incendiary and interesting and start a conversation and show the dangers inside the home of these kinds of choices,” Cummings told The Hollywood Reporter. ABC rejected the episode idea.

No Shortage Of Controversies

This isn’t the only controversial thing to arrive from the reboot. In “Roseanne Gets the Chair,” Roseanne took a jab at fellow ABC sitcoms Fresh Off the Boat and Black-ish by stating “They’re just like us.” When it came to the joke, Bob’s Burgers writer Kelvin Yu stated, “It’s an endorsement of dismissiveness and disregard. It’s a familiarity and comfort with the culture of objectifying and demeaning people of color.”

ABC

In “Go Cubs,” Roseanne assumed her Muslim neighbors’ WiFi password was “DeathToAmerica.”

A Network Smash

The 10th season of Roseanne has provided big numbers for ABC. The network renewed the show for an 11th season after its massive season premiere. The episode became the highest-rated sitcom on television since The Big Bang Theory back in 2014.

ABC

“The show is as fresh and relevant today as it was when it left the air 21 years ago. We can’t wait to see what the ‘Roseanne’ team has in store for next year,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey told Deadline.
