Over the course of several months or years, they transform their lives according to the characters they’re portraying. These five actors’ iconic roles caused them to grow as individuals and changed their lives completely.

Brie Larson Defends Survivors

Brie Larson received an Academy Award for Best Actress for portraying a young woman who survives a kidnapping in her 2015 film Room. The actress spent six months researching the effects of sexual abuse and confinement. The role allowed Larson to emerge as a powerful voice for sexual assault survivors. She now opposes sexual abuse and has spoken about her own harassment experience. She asked, “When will we start supporting our brave abuse survivors instead of protecting their rapists?”

Jennifer Garner Went Back To Church

When Jennifer Garner moved to Los Angeles, she stopped attending weekly church services because “it wasn’t something that was just part of the culture in the same way,” according to the actress. But following her divorce from Ben Affleck, Garner starred in the religious family film Miracles from Heaven. The film helped Garner reconnect with the church and now her family attends weekly church services again.

James Cromwell Became A Vegan

James Cromwell became a vegetarian in the 1970s, but following the 1995 film Babe, he transitioned to veganism and becoming an animal rights activist. After working with a pig and other extraordinary animals, his life was forever changed. Since then, Cromwell and his wife have visited animal sanctuaries and support multiple animal rights organizations. He said, “Go vegan! If you love animals, don’t eat them!”

Angelina Jolie Discovered Her True Calling

When Angelina Jolie starred in the 2001 thriller, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, it completely changed her life. She worked in Cambodia and Jolie discovered her true calling. She quickly began relief work and was named a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. Since then, she has visited more than 20 countries and still helps refugees today. While Jolie may not appear in as many movies, she’s found her real passion in her humanitarian work.

Nichelle Nichols Advocates For Diversity

Nichelle Nichols starred as Lieutenant Uhura on the original Star Trek television series in the 1960s, and everyone fell in love with her. During the show’s run, Nichols became an advocate for multiple NAACP fundraisers, credited by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as “a symbol” of the good fight for civil rights. Following the show, NASA used Nichols to recruit female astronauts, including Sally Ride.
