Robin Williams Improvised This ‘Good Will Hunting’ Scene and Made It Ten Times Better

Published

Good Will Hunting (1997) is an incredible coming of age story that brings together three actors who are still lauded for its performance. It brought both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to stardom, but it was beloved comedian Robin Williams that stole the show. He made one of the most iconic scenes in the movie so much better, with this little bit of improv you probably thought was scripted.

Robin Williams Ad-Libs The Best Scene In The Movie

Good Will Hunting tells the story of a young man (Will) who can solve any problem except the ones he sees within himself. That is until he meets a cunning, authentic therapist (Dr. Sean Maguire) who teaches him how to love, accept loss, and find his place in the world. In one scene, Will tells Sean that he’s scared of finding out if the girl he likes is imperfect. Sean tells Will that even though the girl won’t ever be perfect, it’s the imperfections that make will make her truly special.

In the original script, Sean tells Will a story about his late wife turning the alarm clock off in the night, which would make him late for work. However, Robin Williams ad-libs a story about his wife farting in her sleep, and how it used to wake up everyone in the house, including the dog.

Matt Damon And The Cameraman Can’t Control Their Laughter

The scene was kept as is for the film and is one of the most heartfelt in all the movie. Partially, because Matt Damon’s laugh is genuine. He wasn’t expecting the improvisation and found the scene hilarious.

Some believe the surprise was so funny that it had the cameraman laughing. About halfway through the scene, you can notice the camera start to shake, presumably because they were laughing so hard. Fans are grateful they left the scene as is, even with some shaky angles.

Robin Williams Remembered For His Legacy

The film brings tears to many viewers’ eyes. The film is not only one of Williams‘ most touching performances, but a testament to his true talent as a creator.

When Williams died in 2014, fans were heartbroken for the loss of such a great talent and such an honorable man. To commemorate his life, the Boston Public Park memorialized the bench where Sean brings Will to convince him to go live his life, free from his self-made limitations.
