Teacher Uses Plain Rice to Teach Class an Unforgettable Lesson

Published

on

Ana Paula Frezatto Martins may appear to be just a regular teacher in Curitiba, located in the southern regions of Brazil. However, unlike most teachers, Martins’s teaching methods aren’t always ordinary.

In order to teach her class about the power and impact of words, she devised an unusual rice experiment. The teacher prepared two sealed glass jars with one cup of rice in each. She then instructed her students to say negative things to jar number one, which received nasty comments normally encountered in daily life, such as “you’re useless”, “you’re stupid”, “you’re a loser”, etc. The jar was labeled the “hate cup.”

She then asked the students to say positive things to jar number two, which received uplifting praises such as “you’re special”, “you’re smart”, “you’re cool”, etc. This jar received the “love cup” label.

Fast-forward to a couple of days later. To the students’ surprise, the rice in the ‘Love Cup’ underwent the natural fermentation process, whereas the contents of the “Hate Cup” turned considerably murkier and moldier.

When asked why she did the rice experiment with her class, Martins shared that she wanted to inculcate in her students with the value and significance of focusing on the positive side of life more than the negative.

Martin explained, “In my classes, I explain the importance of saying nice things to each other, but kids need more tangible physical expressions of our examples.”

Apparently, her young students are thankful and appreciative of the lesson. 10-year-old Anita Santini Trevisan claims that the experiment has inspired her to become more positive, saying: “When you say something nice, like ‘you can do it’, you feel that in your heart.”

Henrique Kloster, another student, similarly concludes: “The damage of negativity is bigger than we can imagine … there are two ways to say things, the right way is to praise the good side of others with the eyes of the heart, not the eyes we see.”

Nowadays, the one-time residence of international pop sensation Michael Jackson is going by a new name: Sycamore Valley Ranch. Much of the estate is as it was during the 15 years Jackson called it his home, except for a few glaring differences – namely, the removal of the fun-fair rides that gave the home its whimsical name Neverland Ranch.
