These Real Life Robots Can Almost Pass For Being Human

Published

on

Blade Runner 2049 took us into a future where robots are indistinguishable from human beings, but the truth is we’re not far away from that future now.

The World Of Realistic Robots

There are two areas of robotics that will deliver something indistinguishable from a human being. The first is the form factor. Creating a package that looks and feels like a human being.

In his recent book Humanoid, photographer Max Aguilera-Hellweg shows that today’s robots are frighteningly close to passing as regular people like you and me. The robot above, Joey Chaos, is the product of Hanson Robotics and his form is very realistic.

The Second Factor Of Passable Humanity

The robot below is Geminoid F from the Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory in Kyoto, Japan and while she is incredibly realistic to look at, she hasn’t yet passed the second test – artificial intelligence.

That’s not to say that designers aren’t trying to deliver artificial intelligence. Many of you will have heard of The Turing Test which is successfully passed if “a computer is mistaken for a human more than 30% of the time during a series of five-minute keyboard conversations.” That test was first beaten in 2014 by “Eugene Goostman,” a simulation of a 13-year old Ukranian boy.

Meet BINA 48, The First Android

BINA (Breakthrough Intelligence via Neural Architecture) 48 has been called the first sentient robot and has a face that moves with real emotions, eyes that can see, ears that can hear and the ability to converse with humans.

BINA 48 is built by Hanson Robotics and modeled after Martine Rothblatt’s wife. Martine is the artificial intelligence designer for the BINA project.

BINA 48 Has Appeared In Public

While BINA 48 has no body, she has appeared in public on several occasions. Most recently, she was a guest on The View to talk about robotics.

It’s worth noting that BINA 48 is not quite at the level where we should be worried about being replaced by robots. She currently functions at roughly the level of a human 3-year-old.

These robots are a window into our future. It is probably no more than 20 years before a true android is created and then human and machine may become interchangeable.
