Is Quentin Tarantino Ending His Career Now?

Updated

on

Since 1992’s Reservoir Dogs, director Quentin Tarantino has delivered a slew of acclaimed movies. With his forthcoming film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he’s gaining the biggest praise of his career. Unfortunately, Tarantino’s looking to close out his time as a director early.

Calling It Quits Already?

In numerous interviews, Tarantino has stated that his directing career will end after his 10th film.  “It would be wonderful to make my tenth movie my best movie — go out with a big bang, or with a small chamber piece after a big bang. I think about that every once in a while, but it’s not a real consideration. I’ve got to leave myself open for the right story that talks to me,” he said in a 2015 interview with New York Magazine.

While talking about his upcoming film, the director hints that he’s done with movies. “I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road,” he says. “I see myself writing film books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies,” he told GQ Australia.

For some fans, this may be a shock. With Hollywood being his ninth movie, fans were hoping for one last flick. Brad Pitt, who plays Cliff Booth in the film, thinks Tarantino is telling the truth. “No, I don’t think he’s bluffing at all. I think he’s dead serious. And I kind of openly lament that to him, but he understands the math of when he feels like directors start falling off their game. But he has other plans and we’re not going to have to say goodbye for a long time,” Pitt also told GQ Australia. Pitt and Hollywood co-star Leonardo DiCaprio worked with Tarantino in the past. DiCaprio previously worked with the director in Django Unchained. Pitt worked with Tarantino in True Romance and Inglourious Basterds.

What About ‘Star Trek’?

Recently, there have been talks of Tarantino working on the upcoming Star Trek movie. Last month, he delivered an update on its process. “There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet,” he told Empire Magazine. The script was written by Mark L. Smith, who worked on 2015’s The Revenant. Paramount Pictures are open with having Tarantino work on a Star Trek story. His vision of Star Trek won’t be canon to the current rebooted film franchise. Star Trek 4, which follows Star Trek Beyond, has seen some issues due to contract disputes. Tarantino’s Star Trek, however, might include members from the rebooted film franchise.

It’s Up To Tarantino Now

Possibly ending his career with a Star Trek movie might raise a few eyebrows from everyone. With Tarantino’s portfolio, fans would expect him to end things with another original concept. The love for Hollywood has been growing amongst critics. There’s even talk of the movie gaining an Oscar nomination or two. Tarantino is no stranger to Oscar gold. He’s earned the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay with Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained. While it’s been a decade since his last nomination for Best Director, he might earn it for this flick. If it becomes a huge success, Tarantino might actually close the book on a 10th film. “Well, um, if it’s really well received, maybe I won’t go to 10. Maybe I’ll stop right now! Maybe I’ll stop while I’m ahead. We’ll see,” he told GQ Australia.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters on July 26 in the United States.
