Queen’s Brian May Talks About Scary Heart Attack

Updated

on

Queen guitarist Brian May is one of the most recognizable names in music history. Recently, he suffered a massive heart attack, which nearly ended his illustrious 56-year career. Now, he’s telling fans worldwide all about his near-tragic situation.

Sheer Heart Attack

On Instagram, the iconic guitarist discussed what led to his heart attack. The whole thing started because of his love of gardening. While gardening at home, May accidentally fell on his buttocks, which forced him into the hospital. During this time, he didn’t post on Instagram, which is something he loves doing. Days after the incident, May returned to the social media platform to tell fans he’s okay.

When he returned home, May continued to feel pain all over him. After going back to the hospital, he learned he had suffered a small heart attack along with a torn muscle. “I thought I was a very healthy guy, but I turned out to have three arteries that were congested and in danger of blocking the supply of blood to my heart,” May said on Instagram. To fix the problem, May got surgery to aid his blocked arteries.

As expected, he didn’t let Queen’s 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack pass him by. “Sheer Heart Attack eh ? Well, I think I always worried a little bit about that album title. I wondered if it might upset some people who had actually had heart attacks,” May wrote in the Instagram video caption.

Don’t Stop Me Now

This isn’t the first time May has dealt with some health problems. When touring in support of Queen II, he contracted hepatitis, which forced the trek to end early. While working on the follow-up to Sheer Heart Attack, May was placed in the hospital with a stomach ulcer. This led to him not recording his parts along with the other band members. Fortunately, May worked on his parts by himself in the studio. “It was very weird, because I was able to see the group from the outside, and was pretty excited by what I saw,” May told Classic Rock Magazine.

This wasn’t the first time May has been under the knife, either. Over the past several years, his leg problems forced him into the ER twice. In 2013, he got knee surgery right before touring with Queen. During these shows, May chose to sit down to not aggravate things. In 2019, May got surgery done on his Achilles tendon. Much like his knee surgery, this was also done before another trek with Queen.

You Are The Champions

May won’t let this situation deter him from rocking out when he can. While everyone is on lockdown from the coronavirus epidemic, May is keeping his hopes high. He recently re-recorded Queen’s classic hit “We Are The Champions” with Adam Lambert. Titled “You Are The Champions,” the song is dedicated to health care workers risking their lives right now. All of the song’s proceeds go towards the Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund for The World Health Organization. The epidemic put a major dent in May’s touring plans with Queen. The beloved rock band had to postpone their 2020 dates to 2021. Outside of Queen, May worked on King’s Daughters’ new song, “Get Up.”

Fortunately, the coronavirus has changed May’s eating habits forever. Since the start of 2020, May has been eating a plant-based diet. After the virus hit, May stated it stemmed from people eating meat. For him, May believes vegan is the way to go.

With his healthy eating habits and some free time, May will be doing just fine. It won’t be long until he’ll back on stage with his band members by his side.
