The True Meaning Behind The Jewels Queen Elizabeth Wore On Her Recent Televised Address

It’s hard to talk about royalty and not bring up Queen Elizabeth. For almost 70 years, she’s been a major part of the royal family. During a recent TV appearance about the current coronavirus outbreak, she got everyone talking by wearing some special family pieces — a brooch and necklace that included some hidden meanings that many find encouraging.

A Glamorous Brooch

During this speech, Queen Elizabeth wore a turquoise brooch from her grandmother Queen Mary. In 1893, Queen Mary gained the brooch from her husband George V as a wedding present. This specific brooch was last worn by Queen Elizabeth back in 2014. For many, this item represents unity and love around the world. The color turquoise is highly associated with love, which gives the brooch a stronger vibe. Others see this as a way of showcasing the Queen’s overall leadership.

Queen Mary’s other jewelry has also made rare appearances over the decades. Queen Elizabeth wore Queen Mary’s tiara at her 1947 wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. In 2018, Meghan Markle wore Queen Mary’s bandeau tiara at her wedding to Prince Harry. Queen Mary gained this tiara as a wedding gift from the County of Lincoln. This tiara was given to Queen Elizabeth following the 1953 death of Queen Mary.

While she was alive, Queen Mary was a major collector of jewelry. Some noticeable items in her collection include the Delhi Durbar necklace, Scroll Cambridge emerald brooch, and the love trophy collar necklace. Most of this collection is kept in a secret place in Buckingham Palace.

Busting Out The Necklace

Aside from the brooch, Queen Elizabeth wore a stunning three-strand pearl necklace. This piece of jewelry was a gift from George V. Unlike the brooch, Queen Elizabeth has worn this in public on several occasions that required strong leadership including the eve of Princess Diana’s funeral. Recently, she wore it during the Diamond Jubilee back in 2012. Queen Elizabeth also has different sets of three-strand pearl necklaces at her disposal. For major moments, the one from George V gets thrown on. The necklace is meant to show the Queen’s solidarity towards everyone. With the epidemic impacting the world, unity is essential in keeping everyone feeling optimistic. Whether it’s George V’s gift or one of her additional necklaces, the message stays the same.

This Seems Familiar

While the brooch and necklace look divine, there’s a bigger backstory for both items. During the horrific 1918 influenza pandemic, George V and Queen Mary ruled England. When it was done, over 50 million people worldwide died from the pandemic. Out of that number, 250,000 casualties were from England. With this current coronavirus situation, wearing these items is a reminder of what her grandparents went through. Even though things are tough now, she knows the worst will be over soon.

Jewelry For Ages

When it comes to jewelry, Queen Elizabeth always has the finest on the market. Her best piece of jewelry is St. Edward’s Crown. She wore it once during her coronation day, and it hasn’t been worn since then. “You can’t look down to read the speech, you have to take the speech up. Because if you did, your neck would break and it [the crown] would fall off,” she said in an interview with the BBC. “So there are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they are quite important things. It’s sort of, I suppose, the beginning of one’s life, really, as a sovereign.”

Long Live The Queen

For someone like Queen Elizabeth, she’s seen it all. Over the decades, she’s been the voice of hope throughout every major event. When Princess Diana died in 1997, Queen Elizabeth helped her country heal its wounds. While she just turned 94 years old, England isn’t done with the Queen just yet. As long as her country needs guidance, she’ll be there to lend a hand. Of course, she’ll look like a million bucks while doing it.
