Quaithe, The Prophet ‘Game of Thrones’ Mystery Revealed

Now that Game of Thrones has officially wrapped up, many fans are going back and trying to tie up loose ends in several plot points throughout the season. Since many are focusing on Daenerys’ storyline from beginning to end, fans have started to uncover the story of an overlooked character from season two. Quaithe, played by Laura Pradelska, appears in only two episodes of the show, but she may have had a much bigger impact than first anticipated. You may remember her for her shocking hexagonal gold mask, but her omens are what’s most important. She appeared first to warn Jorah that the citizens of Quarth would try and steal Dany’s dragons and later warns him to be wary of the Doom of Valyria. We later find out that the men of Quarth do try and steal her dragons, and that the Doom of Valyria was indeed dangerous for Jorah, as it is where he contracts greyscale. However, her prophesy and appearances have much more depth than originally believed. Here’s why:
Quaithe In A Song of Ice And Fire
Quaithe didn’t make much of an impression other than having a bold costume and some very accurate predictions; however, she plays a much bigger role in George R.R. Martin’s story. In the books, she interacts with Daenerys one on one, and tells her, “To go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east. To go forward you must go back and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow.” She later talks with Dany and warns her, “Soon comes the pale mare and after her the others. Kraken and dark flame, lion and griffin, the sun’s son and the mummer’s dragon. Trust none of them. Remember the Undying. Beware the perfumed seneschal.” Most of these cryptic characters don’t appear in the show, except for “the lion,” which is presumed to be Tyrion Lannister, and of course the Undying, which we later find out almost lead to Dany’s demise before she takes King’s Landing. Though she is much more important in the books, Quaithe may have had a greater symbolism in the show as well.
Why Is Quaithe In Game of Thrones?
Quaithe’s understanding of Dany’s future, as well as her striking helmet and mask, may mirror another fateful character in the show: Melisandre. Her helmet is said to be designed after Melisandre’s necklace in the show. Quaithe served the same purpose to Daenerys as the Red Priestess did for Stannis. She was meant to warn Dany of the dangers ahead, yet encourage her to go forward in her mission. Quaithe had much less screen time than Melisandre. However, her predictions were too accurate for them to be a coincidence. She was meant to be the whisper in the ear of Dany at the beginning of her journey, convincing her that she was indeed destined to rule. This belief in destiny is what ultimately brought Daenerys to King’s Landing, and led to the events that ended the war.
Will Quaithe Reappear In The Prequels?
With this new fan theory surfacing, many viewers are hoping that Quaithe will make an appearance in the Game of Thrones prequels. HBO released a statement that the new show would be much different from the original: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” We know that the prequels will take place many centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, starting with the Children of the Forest and the creation of the White Walkers. However, it is possible that the new series will stretch several seasons and eventually catch up to the events surrounding the Iron Throne that we’re familiar with. Geoge R.R. Martin is involved with the creation of the prequel series, which gives fans hope for a series as immersive and mesmerizing as the original.
