Proof Today’s Kids Could Never Get Away With The Stuff We Did

Published

on

As we remember past generations, it looks like the children of decades ago seemed to get away with much more than today’s kids. As years have passed, parents seem to have become more aware of danger, more afraid of germs—you get it. Things aren’t the same. Kids are a lot more sheltered.

Let’s look back at a few of the things we all used to get away with that kids today could never do.

Dropping By Unannounced

When we had nothing more than landlines, it was pretty commonplace for kids to stop by and knock on the front door to see if so-and-so would like to play. That’s no longer the norm.

Come to think of it, a lot of the things on this list will have to do with supervision—or lack thereof. Who doesn’t remember wandering the neighborhood until dinnertime?

Today, it seems like parents dip their kids in vats of hand sanitizer before heading out. Decades ago, you weren’t having an optimal childhood unless you had dirt under your fingernails.

This is illegal in plenty of states and just generally an unsafe practice. But a long time ago, plenty of kids knew the fun of riding along in the back.

Home Alone? Never.

Maybe it’s due to the movie franchise or just crime statistics in general, but you won’t find too many parents these days that are willing to leave their youngsters at home by themselves.

Going Trick Or Treating Alone

There are already plenty of things that parents have to worry about during Halloween festivities. Today, very few are willing to let their kids wander the streets unsupervised at night.

Plenty of kids (and adults) ride their bikes without helmets today, but most parents aren’t willing to run the risk of their children suffering head injuries.

Candy Cigarettes

What needs to be said about these candy novelties? Some taglines described the novelty candies as “Just like dad!”

At least 12 countries around the world aren’t having it and banned the sale of these products.

Childhood obesity rates in the United States are alarmingly high—one in five children between six and 19 years old is obese. Around the rest of the world, though, junk food diets aren’t the norm.

Drinking From The Garden Hose

Rodales

Heavy metals, plasticizers, and lead have been found in the water that sits inside garden hoses. Decades ago, a drink from the hose wasn’t any cause for concern. Today, you can bet that parents are teaching their kids to go indoors for their hydration.

Situated in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Monica, California, the almost 3,000 acre plot of land upon which Neverland Ranch was constructed has recently been placed back on the market. Nowadays, the one-time residence of international pop sensation Michael Jackson is going by a new name: Sycamore Valley Ranch. Much of the estate is as it was during the 15 years Jackson called it his home, except for a few glaring differences – namely, the removal of the fun-fair rides that gave the home its whimsical name Neverland Ranch.
