Princess Di Used To Sneak Out To Bars With Freddie Mercury

Diana, Princess of Wales was loved around the world for her warm heart, glowing personality, and authentic elegance. However, there may be a more adventurous side to Diana that we never saw while she was a royal. In her new book, The Power of Positive Drinking, British comedian Cleo Rocos tells about Diana’s nights on the town with her and her pop star friends.

Diana’s Forbidden Night On The Town

In The Power of Positive Drinking, Cleo Rocos mentions several anecdotes about her and her dear friend, Princess Diana. She claims that on one occasion that she, Freddie Mercury, and her then-costar Kenny Everett sneaked Diana into the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, a famed gay bar in the late 80s.

Diana went undetected in part due to her disguise — an army jacket, hat, and sunglasses — and partly due to the attention put on Freddie Mercury. Fans were so immersed in seeing the Queen frontman that the didn’t even notice Lady Di.

Cleo, Diana, And Freddie Pregamed Watching The Golden Girls

According to Rocos, the partying didn’t start at Royal Vauxhall Tavern. They had apparently spent the afternoon together watching The Golden Girls while drinking champagne. Rocos says they turned the sound down on the T.V. and ad-libbed “a much naughtier storyline.”

Today

When Rocos and Mercury decided to go out, Diana insisted that she come along. Rocos tried to persuade Diana against it, in case someone were to spot her and put her photo in the tabloids. However, Freddie Mercury encouraged her to have some fun and take the risk.

Cleo Has Many Fond Memories Of Diana’s Adventurous Spirit

Cleo Rocos had a steady career in T.V. and film, and was very well-known around the time that Princess Di married into the royal family. She was apparently great friends with both Diana and Freddie,.

The Happy Foodie

Cleo talks very fondly of the pair in her book. She said, “I have fantastic memories of drinking with Princess Diana. She would regularly sneak out on her own, in disguise, to go to places round the corner from the Palace… I’ll never forget watching Diana, Kenny and Freddie dancing around the lounge to the Gypsy Kings.”
