Prince William Reveals Difficult Times As Air Ambulance Pilot And His Struggle With Trauma

Published

on

Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, has recently spoken out about his own struggles with trauma and is actively advocating for mental health awareness in the U.K. He recently visited Switzerland and spoke about his hardships while working in the medical profession, and is encouraging the community to remove the stigma from talking about depression, PTSD, and other mental health concerns.

Prince William Takes Initiative For Next Generation’s Mental Health

Many may not know, but Price William actually worked as an air ambulance pilot for some time before he came into the royal spotlight. He worked in the Royal Air Force’s Search and Rescue Force for over five years before his children were born.

William spoke about his experiences in the Royal Air Force at the 49th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He is urging countries to take action on mental health awareness and treatment because he empathizes with those who have suffered great trauma.

One Medical Case Still Haunts The Prince

Prince William was asked at the conference if there was a particular case or situation that affected him more than others. The Price said that there was but that he “still find[s] it very difficult to talk about,” and did not share further. He added, “…People in the medical community have these particular cases where I don’t think you ever get over it because you go through someone else’s pain…”

The case to which he was referring he said was related to his children, which made it particularly hard for him to overcome. William admits that for a while he struggled to stay afloat and manage his mental health afterward. He told the panel, “I know that if I hadn’t taken the action that I did then, I would have definitely gone down a slippery slope and I would have been dealing with mental illness on a different level.”

The Royal Family Pushes For Mental Health Awareness

William, Kate Middleton, and brother Prince Harry have all come to the forefront to bring awareness to mental health in the United Kingdom. They have together founded the Heads Together initiative to provide access to treatment and reduce the stigmas both socially and professionally over mental health.

Prince William was brave to open up about his struggle, but it is people like him that can change the face of mental illness. Hopefully, we will see other brave public figures follow in his footsteps.
