Prince Charles is linked to many famed rulers and dignitaries, through his bloodline, but this one takes the cake. The Prince of Wales is reportedly related to one infamous character in world history––Count Dracula.

Transylvania Roots

Many know the legend of Dracula, the terrifying ruler from Transylvania, Romania, who drank people’s blood and turned into a bat at any given time. Dracula was inspired by 15th-century nobleman Vlad the Impaler who cruelly punished his enemies–– often, as his name suggests, by impalement.

The Royal Family is linked to Vlad, with Prince Charles having several ancestors that lived in Transylvania during that time. Because of his lineage, the prince has a strong affinity for the area. And now, the country of Romania is using that bloodline to help tourism with Prince Charles’ help.

A Tourist Boost

The country of Romania was looking to increase tourism in the country overall. With the permission of the royals, the Romanian National Tourist Office shares the information of Prince Charles and Count Dracula in their visitor brochures.

Prince Charles even recorded a promotional video, sharing that he is a distant relative of Vlad. “Transylvania is in my blood,” he jokes in an interview first shown on satellite television last year. “The genealogy shows I am descended from Vlad the Impaler, so I do have a bit of a stake in the country.”

Love For Romania

The Prince of Wales frequently travels to Romania. In fact, he bought a farmhouse in Viscri, a village in rural Transylvania, which is open as a guest house which is available as a guest house at certain times of the year.

Prince Charles also serves as patron of the Mihai Eminescu Trust, which focuses on restoring Transylvania’s villages and other areas. With his help, the charity has been able to restore close to 180 historic homes and churches. So it shows that the prince truly cares about this country that he is tied to by blood––even though it is Dracula’s.
