Poisoned Cat Saved Thanks to Vodka

Published

A jet-black stray cat who swallowed poisonous antifreeze was rushed to RSPCA Animal Hospital in Brisbane, Australia after rescuers found him near death last weekend. Thanks to vodka, though, the poisoned cat is doing well today.

“He couldn’t stand, he couldn’t lift his head, he was hypothermic, he was having convulsions, and really having trouble breathing,” shared RSPCA Veterinarian Sarah Kanther in an interview with ABC News.

The poisoned cat is believed to be extremely lucky considering that most animals fail to make it to the vet on time after ingesting antifreeze. In fact, the vet opined that the black cat only had less than an hour to live.

“Luck was definitely on his side when our inspectors brought him in to us. Just in the nick of time,” Kanther said.

Apart from being lucky that he made it to the animal hospital on time, the cat’s lucky streak continued considering that one of the nurses have the antidote he needed to survive – vodka.

Vet Kanther shared: “The antidote is intravenous ethanol or vodka. It just so happened that, one of our nurses had a bottle of vodka lying around, so we were able to administer it just in time to save his life.”

The cat who was given the nickname “Tipsy” was apparently “off his rocker” and “having a jolly good time” after the vodka drip and with plenty of fluids and hearty breakfast he was expected to completely recover from the incident.

It is still uncertain whether Tipsy was intentionally poisoned as it is not uncommon.

Michael Beatty from RSPCA revealed that: “We have seen a lot of baiting going on and some of it is using antifreeze. And that’s really disturbing because from what I understand it can take a small teaspoon and it’s a very unpleasant way to die.”

Since Tipsy has no microchip, the rescuers are trying to focus on finding his owner. If none will come forward after a given time, the cat would be put up for adoption.
