Phoebe Waller-Bridge Is Ending ‘Fleabag’ At Season Two

British comedy Fleabag has been piling up the accolades and acclaim from every turn. If people didn’t tune in for its first season, Fleabag‘s second season drew them in. The second season is considered flawless by numerous publications. Unfortunately, that’s where the show will bid farewell.

Shutting It Down Early

At the 2019 Emmys, Fleabag dominated with six wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series. From the massive wins came talk of a possible third season. Showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge made it clear that Fleabag is done. “This just feels like the most beautiful, beautiful way to say goodbye to it. It does feel nice to go out on a high. You can’t get higher than this,” she told The Los Angeles Times.

Fleabag originated from Waller-Bridge’s one-woman play of the same name. The show’s character stemmed from a storytelling challenge. “It started as a challenge from a friend to do a ten-minute slot in her stand-up storytelling night, which is where this whole idea came from of doing it sort of stand-up-y. I was on with a bunch of other stand-ups, actors, and playwrights. I’ve never done that before, I never really wanted to do it,” Waller-Bridge told Vulture. “It’s terrifying, but having accepted the challenge I thought, you know, I’ve never played, as an actress, I’ve never played a part that’s just shamelessly dangerous as a woman.”

The play version of Fleabag earned the Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This prestigious award, which was established in 1973, is given to new plays. Waller-Bridge brought the show to various venues, including Salisbury Playhouse and Wyndham’s Theatre.

Can You Feel The Love?

The growing popularity of Fleabag‘s second season left Waller-Bridge in awe. “It’s the word-of-mouth stuff that just kills me,” she said. “Knowing people said, ‘I’ve told my friend and my friend told their friend and my whole family watches…’ That stuff is really special. The press has been so amazing and writing these incredible pieces on it,” Waller-Bridge also told The Los Angeles Times. “It did feel like a tidal wave, didn’t it, just suddenly hitting us all? And here, because it lands as one thing, one bingeable thing here — in the U.K., it’s spread out over six weeks — it landed and there was this explosion of response. There were kind of shockwaves to it.”

From Bond To HBO

While Fleabag may be done, Waller-Bridge has shown she’s a rising name in entertainment. Before Fleabag, she was a showrunner, writer, and star of British comedy-drama Crashing. The series earned Waller-Bridge the Best Breakthrough Talent award at the 2017 BAFTA Awards. In 2018, she developed the BBC America thriller Killing Eve. During the first season, she was the showrunner and writer.

Back in April, Waller-Bridge rewrote parts of the forthcoming James Bond film No Time to Die. She was asked to work on the script by Bond actor Daniel Craig. This made her the second female to work on a James Bond script. The first was Johanna Harwood, who worked on From Russia With Love. Waller-Bridge gave the characters a more human side, which will be shown onscreen. “I just want to make sure that when they get those pages through, that Lashana [Lynch], Léa [Seydoux], and Ana [de Armas] open them and go, ‘I can’t wait to do that.’ As an actress, I very rarely had that feeling early in my career. That brings me much pleasure, knowing that I’m giving that to an actress,” she told Deadline.

Waller-Bridge will be busy producing and starring in the forthcoming HBO series Run. The show features Emmy-winning actress Merritt Wever and Tony-nominated actor Domhnall Gleeson. Run is created by Waller-Bridge’s frequent collaborator Vicky Jones. The two co-founded DryWrite Theatre Company before working on Fleabag. No release date has been confirmed for Run.
