Parents Who Named Their Daughters “Khaleesi” Or “Daenerys” Feel Bad After The Series Finale

Games of Thrones

Game of Thrones, HBO’s most popular television series, finally ended May 19th in what was the network’s most-watched episode of all time. Despite mixed fan reviews for the ending, the show remains one of the greatest entertainment masterpieces of the 21st century. However, there are some fans who are outraged for one particular reason. Thousands of parents named their children after landmark characters in the series. Some of those characters’ final fates came with unexpected plot twists that made these parents regret their decision. Here’s why so many GoT fans are regretting naming their babies after favorite characters before the season finale (warning: spoilers ahead).

Are People Really Naming Their Kids After GoT?

Games of Thrones was no doubt an incredible T.V. program. Characters were complex and full of lust for power, money, and each other. However, some fans took it the next level by naming their kids after their favorite characters from the series. SSA reports say that over 3,000 children were named after Game of Thrones characters since 2011 when the series debuted. While some of these may not be specifically GoT-inspired (Jaime and Brandon are fairly common English names), some are unmistakable. In 2018, 560 babies were named Khaleesi, a.k.a. the Dothraki Queen. The most popular GoT baby name is Arya, with 2,545 baby girls named Arya since 2011. Tyrion is also a name that has grown in popularity. In 2011, 11 boys were named Tyrion, but by 2016 over 50 were named after the wise, good-hearted Lannister. After the series finale, most people would be pleased with their “Arya” or “Tyrion” baby name choice. After Daenerys razed a city and tried to conquer the world with blood and fire, however, some parents were upset.

Should Parents Regret Their Baby Name Choice?

After episode five of season eight, many people commented on how unfortunate it would be to have a baby girl with the name Daenerys or Khaleesi. Memes on Twitter amassed, and many mothers tried to defend their baby name choice. One commented, “What girl hasn’t overreacted when they see their whole world crumbling around them?” Showco-runners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff also defended Dany, saying that the decision to burn down King’s Landing was not about her character, but about the culmination of defeat and disappointment that Daenerys faced in season eight. Moms and Dads of little Khaleesis can take solace in the memories of Dany before her breakdown. Daenerys dropped the Dothraki title several seasons ago, so it’s really the parents of “Daenerys” daughters that are upset. Khaleesi is also a title not unique to Daenerys, as it is what all wives of Dothraki Khals are called until their husbands’ passing. While some parents may be disappointed, most understand that Dany’s downfall doesn’t define her entire story.

Other Popular Baby Names From Pop Culture

“Khaleesi,” “Arya,” and “Tyrion” aren’t the only popular baby names from pop culture. Plenty of parents name their kids after T.V. or movie characters, from “Merideth” and “Derek” in Grey’s Anatomy to “Belle” and “Ariel” of your favorite children’s movies. Sometimes these names stay popular. For example, “Ezra” became one of the top 100 baby names in 2016 according to the SSA. Ezra Fitz from Pretty Little Liars is presumably the inspiration for this name and is ideal since it is quite unique. However, some other names have been less than the best for the kids with them. For example, “Anakin” is surprisingly a very popular Star Wars-inspired name, even though Anakin Skywalker is actually the ultimate villain and murderer/torturer of thousands of people in the series. So, maybe Khaleesi isn’t the worst name after all.
