‘The Last Knight’ Made More Money, But Paramount Still Favors ‘Bumblebee’

Published

The Transformers franchise has worked wonders for Paramount studios. It is one of their most profitable movie series and continues to rake in millions with each release. However, their last two films, The Last Knight and Bumblebee didn’t exactly live up to previous films. Bumblebee grossed and netted less than The Last Knight, yet Paramount still considers it a bigger success. Here’s the reason why:

Transformers Is Paramount’s Best Money-Maker

Until about 2014, Transformers was one of Paramount Studio’s highest grossing movie franchises. Directed by Michael Bay, the first five pulled huge crowds at the box office.

In fact, Transformers is the 13th highest-grossing film series of all time, making over $4.3 billion for Paramount. It’s no surprise that the last two, which didn’t succeed critically or in theatres, were a disappointment.

Bumblebee Was “Solidly Profitable”

Last Knight had the worst opening weekend in Transformers history. it made “only” $605.4 million worldwide, which for Paramount is definitely a disappointment.

In December 2018, they released Bumblebee, which only did $459.3 million globally. By the numbers, you would think Paramount would be disappointed by their last movie, but they said it was “solidly profitable.” However, it makes sense when you look at it more closely.

Why Paramount Was More Disappointed With The Last Knight Than Bumblebee

Though Bumblebee made $1.4 million less than its predecessor, it was substantially less expensive to make. The Last Knight cost over $80 million more than Bumblebee, despite making comparable sales in theatres.

Plus, Bumblebee was rated much better than The Last Knight. It actually became the first Certified Fresh installment on Rotten Tomatoes. Bumblebee is likely to make even more money when it is released on digital DVD, 2019 March 19 and on Blu-ray April 2. Paramount still has faith in their 2018 film, and hopefully will not give up on their Transformers franchise yet.
