Winfrey, as mentioned in the statement put out by CBS, will be a ‘special contributor’ to 60 Minutes. What this means is that she is expected to have several stories in the coming season of the prestigious newsmagazine. The first of several stories is expected to air at some time in the fall.

The finer details of the deal, including its length, have not been revealed yet and CBS has declined to comment on the same. The executive producer of the program, Jeff Fager has told CNN that he had enjoyed discussing this partnership with Winfrey and feels that she is full of ideas and energy and a great person overall.

The primary outlet of Winfrey’s work is the cable channel OWN, in which she is a co-owner along with Discovery Communications. However the historically popular and widely loved “60 Minutes” will provide her the ability to reach many times more viewers with one segment alone as this program is known to draw a mammoth, 10 to 20 million viewers per week.

Oprah Winfrey said on Tuesday in a statement that she has always been a “big admirer” of the 60 Minutes program ever since she was a young reporter. She also mentioned that she was proud as well as excited at the same time to be a part of the legendary news program as she considers it the ‘bastion’ of the journalistic storytelling concept.

She went on to mention that this is a time when the people of the nation are divided and her aim is to add relevant insight and her own perspective at what is separating the people. This according to her will help facilitate the real and important conversations among people from different backgrounds.

The announcement was made on the show ‘CBS This Morning’ which is co-hosted by Winfrey’s friend Gayle King. King said on the show that he was “psyched” about the development and expected Winfrey to be equally excited. This was because of the fact that Oprah Winfrey is known to have said that although she did not miss the day-to-day of the Oprah Winfrey show but missed storytelling and in general, connecting with people. This is why King felt that this would be the “perfect marriage”.
