The Obamas Snag Major Production Deal With Netflix

Published

on

Barack and Michelle Obama may not be the official President and First Lady anymore, but they are continuing to impact people with their work. In their latest venture, the couple is teaming up with Netflix to bring some pretty powerful content to the streaming service.

An Incredible Deal

The Obamas have secured a major multi-year production deal to create a wide variety of content for Netflix. The contract in place will allow both of them to be either on camera as hosts or moderators, or, at times, behind the camera as producers.

Billboard

According to the service, “the Obamas will produce a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.” The first production is reportedly set to air in 2019. The two aren’t rookies at being in front of the camera either, so this seems like a perfect plan for them. However, the decision hasn’t come without its share of controversy already…

A Planned Boycott

There are some conservatives that are very unimpressed with this development deal, though. So much so that they are threatening to boycott the popular streaming service.

On social media, conservative users have posted pictures with the company logo that read “Cancel Netflix” and “No Thanks.” People are even going as far as to sell their shares of stock in the company. The hashtag #CancelNetflix is even making circulation through right-wing blogs and social media accounts.

Inspiring Content

Nevertheless, the Obamas are excited about the new opportunity. There were reports that they planned to get into digital media ventures after their time in the White House ended and it’s become reality.

The couple plans to use the deal to highlight inspiring and diverse stories from across the globe. With impactful storytelling, “we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world,” Barack Obama shared in a statement. Overall, it sounds like a positive and lucrative partnership for them and Netflix.
