The story of Nikki Bella and John Cena’s ringside romance reads like a WWE love story. After the two had dated for five years, they started a wrestling feud against real-life couple Maryse and The Miz. They challenged each other to an epic mixed tag team match, and Bella and Cena ended up winning. Right after the match ended, Cena publically proposed to Bella on April 2, 2017. Of course, she accepted his hand in marriage and decided to take a break from wrestling to focus on her upcoming nuptials.
The Total Divas star shared on her Instagram account that “I never thought I would use this emoji ?❤ A dream come true! My Prince Charming has made me his Queen in a place we call home. I’ll never, ever forget this moment!” John Cena shared the excitement, dishing to the Today show that, “I found the right person. I found a strong person that I consider an inspiration. An equal. Someone when I’m down, can pick me up. It took a person that strong to change my life.”
Fighting The Good Fight
Bella and Cena’s wedding engagement bliss was fully captured on their show Total Bellas. Fans of the pair were given an exclusive look into the fun-filled daily lives of the two wrestlers. They also tackled serious issues, like marriage and kids. Although Bella was beyond happy that Cena had finally popped the question, she wanted to start a family but Cena wasn’t having it. She told E! News that “John had mentioned this a long time ago when he wanted to get married, he said, ‘I just don’t want you to ever think that if I want to marry you and I marry you that means that I want to be a father.'”
This issue seemed to be the only thing standing in the way of Bella and Cena’s seemingly perfect relationship. Nevertheless, the couple continued to plan their wedding nuptials. They even threw an engagement party in January 2018, and Cena tweeted that it was “such a wonderful, meaningful, emotional day yesterday with the woman of my dreams and both of our families…I love you Nicole, you’ve made me realize the importance of togetherness.” Needless to say, the world was stunned when they canceled their engagement on April 15, 2018, less than a month before they were scheduled to be married.
Picking Up The Pieces
With Bella newly single and Cena on the prowl, wrestling fans didn’t know what to expect from the former lovebirds. At first, it seemed like they were friendly after the split. But soon afterward, the couple announced that they were done for good. Bella spilled the tea that, “Hopefully one day we will get back together. And if we don’t, we just want each other to be very, very happy.” In April 2019, Nikki gleefully declared that she’s currently dating her Dancing With The Stars co-star Artem Chigvintsev.
John Cena has also moved on from his previous relationship. He’s recently been spotted smiling and holding hands with his new girlfriend, Shay Shariatzadeh, a product manager at the Motorola subsidiary Avigilon. Although there’s no hint of reconciliation between Cena and Bella, they seem to be “very, very happy” with their new partners, and that’s all that matters.
