A New Trailer Gets Viewers Pumped Up For True Detective Season 3

Published

on

It’s been a minute since we were all obsessed with HBO’s original series True Detective, and felt disappointed with the hastily filmed second installment. HBO just dropped a new trailer for the third season and from the looks of things, this one promises to be solid.

A Fresh New Detective

The trailer features Mahershala Ali in the role of a detective haunted by a case regarding two missing children in rural Arkansas. Ali has steadily earned acclaim for roles in series like Crossing Jordan and House of Cards, and he won an Oscar for his role in the film, Moonlight.

Joining Ali in the cast is Stephen Dorff (Blade),  Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story) and Carmen Ejogo (Alien: Covenant).

Southern Gothic Debut

True Detective is a limited series created by Nic Pizolatto focusing on a deep dive into a disturbing case. The first series, starring Matthew McConneghey and Woody Harrelson, was a breakout hit for HBO. It was a dark yet mesmerizing story. Critics praised the performances of the leads, bolstered by the powerful imagery from director Cary Fukunaga.

Although the second season boasted a strong cast with Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, it fell flat with HBO viewers. Fukunaga did not direct Season 2 and critics claimed Pizolatto’s storytelling was convoluted. And boring, to be honest.

A Return to Darkness

The new trailer suggests the third season is a return to the themes of a small community in crisis. We see Ali’s character looking back at the case in three stages of his life against a backdrop of small town cinematography.

Do Pizzolatto and Ali have the chops to recreate more magic with this case? We shall find out.

True Detective Season 3 begins on January 13, 2019 on HBO. Check out the trailer below.
