Netflix’s ‘365 DNI’ Is Basically the Polish ‘Fifty Shades’

Updated

on

With everyone in quarantine, streaming services have seen a huge spike. For Netflix, this means millions of people are checking out their vast catalog. A new Netflix film titled “365 DNI” has been spreading like wildfire. Many have labeled it the Polish “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Getting Everyone Talking

“365 DNI” tells the story of a sales director named Laura trying to save her relationship. While doing so, Laura gets kidnapped by mafia member Massimo. Things get hectic when Massimo gives Laura a full year to fall in love with him. The film is an adaptation of Blanka Lipińska’s 2018 novel of the same name.

For this film, they needed two actors fit for the roles. The role of Massimo is played by Michele Morrone, who portrays Claudio Cavalleri on Netflix’s “The Trial.” Morrone also performs a slew of songs in the film. Laura is portrayed by Anna Maria Sieklucka, who appeared on the TV series “Na dobre i na zle.” “365 DNI” is Sieklucka’s film debut. Lipińska makes a cameo appearance as an unnamed bride.

Taking over the director’s chair are Barbara Bialowas and Tomasz Mandes. For Bialowas, tense thrillers like this are nothing new. Bialowas directed 2012’s “Big Love,” which follows 16-year old Emilia and her relationship with biochemist Maciej. Aside from directing, Mandes pulls double duty portraying Massimo’s cousin in “365 DNI.” Both Mandes and Bialowas helped co-write the script, along with Tomasz Klimala.

Before hitting Netflix, the film was theatrically released in Poland back in February. During its time in theaters, the film made $9.4 million.

The Comparisons Are There

Instantly, everyone began comparing it to “Fifty Shades of Grey.” The “Fifty Shades” book franchise was lambasted by critics for its blunt portrayal of BDSM. Despite the criticism, the “Fifty Shades” books were the top three best-selling books of the last decade. The film adaptations earned an impressive $1.3 billion combined at the box office.

Many fans believed the actors really took it to the next level in their intimate scenes. Morrone, however, stated none of it was real. “It seems real because we’re very good actors, maybe. We know how to fake. No, it wasn’t real. It wasn’t real,” Morrone said in a video interview. Cinematographer Bartek Cierlica stated they needed the actors to have the perfect atmosphere for their work. “We reduced the on-set crew to an absolute minimum. As it was handheld, I was following their action and trying to show their passion in a natural but beautiful way,” Cierlica told Variety.

When it comes to which film is more explicit, everyone is choosing “365 DNI” over “Fifty Shades.” Some consider “Fifty Shades” to be generic in comparison. A few people have even stated they can’t go back to watching “Fifty Shades” after viewing “365 DNI.”

As expected, the film gained a plethora of criticism for its content. “Just finished #365Dni & while the sex scenes were great, the story itself just romanticizes kidnapping & a forced relationship. You basically just watch shawty get Stockholm syndrome,” Twitter user @alexamarie_x said. Many people are also hoping others don’t emulate what they saw on screen. “Please remember that there is a huge difference between fantasy and reality. If you are a guy, pls don’t get any ideas. No girl wants to be kidnapped and made to fall in love,” Twitter user @Adielie1 said.

More in the Future?

Lipińska has written three novels in the “DNI” series, including 2019’s “Kolejne 365 dni.” A sequel was in the works, but the coronavirus shut things down for the moment. There’s a great chance Netflix can seize the opportunity and make its service the exclusive home for the sequel, too.
