It’s almost that time of the year again: Halloween. In October, movie fans participate in marathons of their favorite horror films, including The Shining, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and many more. However, if you’re in the mood for something new, Netflix is releasing five new horror films. Get ready to scream!
In The Shadow Of The Moon, Sept. 27
No, this isn’t a horror movie about the Apollo 11 moon landing (while that would be exciting). Releasing on September 27, In the Shadow of the Moon is a psychological serial killer film set in 1988. The movie centers on police officer Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), who is on the hunt for a mysterious serial killer who appears every nine years to cause, well, horror in his town.
Lockhart tries to use scientific explanations to defy the serial killer’s actions. However, none of his plans work. Soon enough, Lockhart becomes obsessed with the mysterious serial killer. His obsession might cost him his family, career and possibly even his sanity.
In The Tall Grass, Oct. 4
Next up on October 4, In the Tall Grass is a creepy adaptation of a novella by the one and only Stephen King and his son, Joe Hill. Anything by Stephen King, the “King of Horror,” is bound to be good. The film, starring supernatural and horror icon Patrick Wilson, shares the story of brother and sister Cal and Becky, who hear a young boy shouting for help after being lost in a field of, you guessed it, tall grass.
Cal (Avery Whitted) and Becky (Laysla De Oliveira) try to save the young boy, but they end up lost themselves. Things take a sinister turn when they realize they’re not alone in the grass. Just like any good Stephen King adaptation, In the Tall Grass will leave viewers on the edge of their seat.
Fractured, Oct. 11
Psychological thrillers have become more popular in recent years. On October 11, you can dig into Fractured, a tense, psychological thriller centering on a father, Ray Monroe (Sam Worthington), who is returning home from a weekend with his in-laws when their daughter, Peri (Lucy Capri), gets badly hurt in an accident. However, that’s not the worst thing to happen to them.
When Ray and his wife, Joanna (Lily Rabe), rush to the hospital, they find out Peri had been taken away for further testing. But at the hospital, both Peri and Joanna vanish, along with any evidence of their existence. Just like any good psychological thriller, Ray will have to hunt for his family before it’s too late.
Eli, Oct. 18
Netflix seems to be interested in horror films involving young children. On October 18, viewers can watch Eli, a film centering on young Eli (Charlie Shotwell), who is undergoing treatment for a rare, debilitating illness at a secluded hospital. He has to be quarantined from the rest of the world, but this probably isn’t a good idea.
Eli’s parents contact Dr. Isabella Horn (Lili Taylor), who wants to try an experimental treatment. However, this treatment leaves Eli plagued with haunting memories he doesn’t recognize, leaving him to question his life. Who can he trust? What happened inside his home? Viewers will be asking the same questions.
Rattlesnake, Oct. 25
Viewers will be questioning who they can trust with the film Rattlesnake, releasing on October 25. The movie tells the story of single mother Katrina Ridgeway (Carmen Ejogo). Katrina is determined to start a new life for her daughter, Clara (Apollonia Pratt). However, tragedy strikes when their car breaks down and Clara is bitten by a venomous rattlesnake.
To save Clara’s life, Katrina trusts a mysterious woman, who promises she can heal her daughter. Unfortunately, Katrina must make a deal with the woman in exchange for her daughter’s life. The deal is something Katrina (and every viewer) will hardly expect. Dun dun dun!
