Fans of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, who have been together off and on since 2009, were surprised to hear that the couple was divorcing after only one year of marriage. Hollywood divorces can be messy and drawn out (which may be why some celebs don’t want to walk down the aisle). However, these two have managed to come to a settlement rather quickly before going their separate ways.
In December 2018, Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot in a private ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tennessee. Less than a year after the wedding, it was announced that they had split. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus told People Magazine in a statement on August 10, 2019. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of the animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
Hemsworth himself reportedly found out about the statement on social media and was blindsided by the news. While Cyrus appeared to move on with The Hills: New Beginnings star Kaitlynn Carter, Hemsworth shared a rare Instagram post quickly confirming the news of their split a few days later. “Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” he captioned a picture near the water.
On August 21, roughly two weeks after the announcement, Hemsworth filed the official papers for a divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Trouble In Paradise
The couple began dating in 2009 when they starred together in the romantic film The Last Song, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. Cyrus and Hemsworth announced their engagement in June 2012 after months of engagement rumors. “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” Cyrus said in an interview with PEOPLE at the time.
However, that happiness was shortlived. The couple reportedly postponed their wedding plans in 2013 and Cyrus was spotted without her engagement ring, leading to rumors of a split between the two. Cyrus and Hemsworth later confirmed that they had ended their engagement. After some years apart, the couple got back together in 2016, confirming their reconciliation with several posts on Instagram. The couple was often spotted on red carpets, celebrating birthdays, holidays and other events together, and stayed strong as a couple after their Malibu home burned down in the wake of the California wildfires. After the two were married in 2018, it was thought that they had managed to get over their relationship hurdles. However, it clearly wasn’t the case.
Coming To Terms
In spite of their divorce, Cyrus and Hemsworth are trying to keep things relatively civil. The couple has quickly come to terms with the divorce settlement. With a prenup in place, the two will reportedly retain their own individual earnings with no need for spousal support. There was also no issue in terms of dividing property. Cyrus and Hemsworth don’t have any kids, making proceedings much smoother. However, Cyrus will keep the couple’s animals at her own home.
Cyrus has moved on from Hemsworth and is currently in a relationship with musician Cody Simpson. The two reportedly spent Christmas with Cyrus’ family and plan to celebrate the New Year together also. Meanwhile, Hemsworth has sparked dating rumors of his own after being spotted introducing model Gabriella Brooks to his parents, Craig and Leonie Hemsworth, while in Byron Bay, Australia. The divorce between Hemsworth and Cyrus is set to be finalized in March 2020, a mere six months after Hemsworth originally filed papers.
