Michelle Rodriguez Secures Female Writer For Next ‘Fast And Furious’ Movie

Michelle Rodriguez isn’t just a tough girl as Letty in the Fast And Furious franchise. In her career as an actress, she is a major influence on the direction of the action movies. She is also an activist for women’s rights and representation in the media. Recently, she brought attention to the lack of female representation in the Fast & Furious production and writing teams, and challenged leaders to make a change for the better.

Rodriguez Calls Out ‘Fast And Furious’ Leaders For No Female Representation

Last year, Michelle Rodriguez openly discussed her discontent with Fast & Furious for its lack of female representation in the writing room. She posted on Instagram just after the eighth movie came out: “F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise…” This was a shocker for fans who have loved her character Letty from the very beginning. Rodriguez also spoke to Bloomberg about her social media stance, and clarified what she meant in the photo caption. She said, “I felt like there was not enough of a female voice in the franchise… You should evolve with the times, not just pander to certain demographics that are stuck.” The producers knew how important she was to the continuation of the series, and agreed to improve their production by including female writing staff. Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley agreed with Rodriguez and promised to hire a female writer for the ninth movie. Rodriguez celebrated the victory, and in an interview said, “If I’m coming back, I really want there to be a female writer to give it a female voice. And finally, they showed me some love, and said yeah!”

Rodriguez Stood Up For What She Believed In

Many of us can agree that changes need to be made in the entertainment industry to equally represent women and minorities on the big screen. In many popular movies, male heroes are celebrated while female leads play lesser parts in the plotline. However, Michelle Rodriguez was not okay with this. She went to Entertainment Weekly and spoke out, stating that she would give up her big Fast & Furious paycheck in order to live by her beliefs. She said in an interview, “My heart doesn’t feel right doing this in front of millions of people, so I can always oblige myself and depart because money, to me, isn’t as important as my lines that you’re not allowed to cross.” She also expressed concerns about the “male-dominated” working environment that was prevalent in the Fast & Furious movie productions. Because the movies have been predominantly marketed to men, there is no surprise that the filming is run by male producers. However, Rodriguez argued that women could enjoy the series just as much, especially if women were better represented.

Universal Involves More Women In Upcoming ‘Fast And Furious’ Movies

Universal Pictures isn’t just adding female writers for its ninth Fast 7 Furious film. They are creating several spin-offs and plan to involve more women in the cast, writer’s room, and production team. The first spinoff movie will premiere this summer under the title “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” It stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and will hit theatres August 2. The second spinoff movie, however, will be a female-dominant film written by Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Universal is actively taking steps to ensure that both men and women enjoy one of their most popular movie franchises and that women have a great place to work on the next big movie. Fast & Furious 9 is currently in production and a release date will be announced soon.
