Mary Tyler Moore, the respected actress and star whose comic 1970s series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, revolutionized the depiction of American women on television, has died at the age of 80. Moore died on Wednesday at Greenwich Hospital, her longtime rep Mara Buxbaum confirmed.

Moore’s death was caused by cardiopulmonary arrest, which she suffered after contracting pneumonia, according to her family. The award-winning actress had been battling type 1 diabetes for years and was on the frontline of the fight against the condition.

Sources say that the groundbreaking actress and producer was in grave condition at the hospital and her family had rushed there to say good-bye. After more than one week on a respirator, doctors took her off the life support Tuesday night. Soon after news of her death broke, fans and stars took to social media to send their condolences.

Moore, who was born in 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, rose to fame as the fatigued wife Laura Petrie on the 1960s “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” As Laura, she traded the housedress of many sitcom wives and dressed her dancer’s legs in fashionable Capri pants since they were suited to the modern American woman.

But it was on the sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970s that she made her mark. At the time when women’s freedom across the world was catching on, Moore’s character brought to television audiences an independent, 1970s unmarried, career woman.

Apart from Marlo Thomas’ 1960s character on the “That Girl,” who had a boyfriend, there were very few precedents in the 60s. “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was hilarious, but no episode was unforgettable than the finale when the new management decide to fire the entire news staff — everyone but Ted Baxter.

The show was the first in a series of award-winning shows that Moore produced with her former husband, Grant Tinker, who died late last year, through their MTM Enterprises. ”Hill Street Blues,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” and “St. Elsewhere” are among the MTM series that followed.

“The Mary Tyler Moore Show” ran 7 seasons and scooped 29 Emmy Awards, a record that stood unbroken for 25 years until was broken by “Frasier” in 2002. Along with dozens of other television appearances, Moore featured in a number of movies, including “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Flirting with Disaster,” and “Six Weeks.”

In her long career, Moore won 7 Emmys — 2 for The Dick Van Dyke Show and 4 for The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Moore was also nominated for an Oscar in 1981 for her role as a grieving mother in “Ordinary People.” To this day, it is her comic series that endure. In Minneapolis, Minnesota there is her statue as Mary Richards waving her hat.
