Feeling Lonely? Just Marry Yourself Like This 40-Year-Old Woman Did!

There’s an old expression that says “You have to love yourself before you can love someone else,” and an Italian woman took that advice quite literally…

Meet Italy’s First Woman To Marry Herself

Laura Mesi is a 40-year-old fitness trainer who, after ending a serious 12-year relationship a couple years ago, was struck by an idea: why not just marry herself?

“I firmly believe that each of us must first of all love ourselves,” said Mesi. “You can have a fairytale even without the prince.”

With that sentiment in mind, Mesi decided to be the first Italian woman to officially marry herself.

How Does A One-Person Marriage Work?

Now, before you start going too deep into the rabbit hole and questioning what a solo anniversary would look like or if it would then be possible to divorce oneself, fear not, these types of ceremonies carry no legal weight whatsoever.

While they don’t mean anything in the eyes of the law, they are part of a growing movement of self-marriage around the world and has been nicknamed “sologamy.” Fans of the arrangement suggest that these ceremonies are really just about acceptance, self-love, and taking advantage of the social proceedings that are usually only alotted for two people that decide to marry.

The trend has caught on with a U.S. company named I Married Me selling self-wedding kits and a Canadian agency titled Marry Yourself Vancouver helping to arrange solo weddings.

The Feedback From The Wedding

Curious what Mesi’s sologamy ceremony looked like? She pulled out all the stops with a lavish three-layer wedding cake, 4 bridesmaids, and 70 guests.

Despite some negative comments on her wedding photos like “So sad,” or “there’s something wrong with your brain,” Mesi has brushed it off and is still thrilled that she followed through on the ceremony.

“Nothing and no-one can turn off my smile,” said Mesi in the wake of negative feedback.

The verdict might still be out on these sologamy ceremonies, but Mesi’s positive attitude is definitely worth imitating!
