Resilient 54-Year-Old Shark Attack Survivor Pays It Forward

Published

on

According to Shark Attack Data, there are 55 shark attacks recorded in California within the past decade, based on statistics from years 2007 to 2017. Three of such unprovoked attacks were fatal. Maria Korcsmaros could have been but a nameless figure in these reports, had it not been for her resilient spirit real-life and, of course, for the heroes who saved her.

The harrowing-turned-inspiring story unfolded just a year ago when 54-year-old Korcsmaros was unsuspectingly attacked by a nine-foot long great white shark while preparing for a triathlon at the Newport, California beach. Before the lifeguards were able to pull her out of the water, she had already sustained serious bite injuries to her upper body. If it weren’t for these brave souls, the swimmer’s fate could’ve been far worse.

After being immediately transported to the Orange County Global Medical Center, the victim’s condition was determined. Diagnoses revealed that her pelvis had been fractured, three of her ribs had been broken, and the muscles on her arm and waist had been severely damaged, forcing her to a three-day stay in the intensive care unit.

After 10 days, Korcsmaros was finally discharged from the hospital. Thankfully, she had not lost her physical faculties and could still walk although in a strained manner. While some people may call it luck, Korcsmaros’ consistent progress in intensive physical therapy and training can also be attributed to her resilient nature as a triathlete. And with the aid of unnamed and unsung heroes in the form of doctors, nurses and therapists, Maria has reached full recovery at last.

This spirited and athletic 54-year-old is currently back in full swing, determined to pay all the kindness she received forward by serving as a volunteer at the trauma center that turned her life back around. And mind you, she even went right back to swimming, having joined the “Mission Day” triathlon back in October.

Much of the estate is as it was during the 15 years Jackson called it his home, except for a few glaring differences – namely, the removal of the fun-fair rides that gave the home its whimsical name Neverland Ranch. The very last vestiges of where the carousel once spun are still visible as you go through the grounds. Read on for an in-depth view of the ranch.
