Luke Skywalker’s ‘Last Jedi’ Story Was In The Works For Five Years

When it comes to franchises like Star Wars, nothing is planned out at the last minute. It takes a long time to put together an amazing plot twist or major story arc. With Star Wars, one huge storyline was in the works for years.

Cool Hand Luke

In Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker made his grand return to the franchise. His appearance and overall storyline drew criticism towards director Rian Johnson. Phil Szostak, who worked on The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, decided to share some old concept art on Twitter. The original vision of Luke dates back all the way to 2013.

Twitter

“My first image I made for #StarWars: #TheForceAwakens. This was January of 2013. Luke was being described as a Col. Kurtz type hiding from the world in a cave… I got a George “Fabulouso” on it to boot,” stated Lucasfilm design supervisor Christian Alzmann in the book.

The Struggle Is Real

Szostak wasn’t done delivering some old tales about Luke’s storyline. He shared a quote from concept artist Doug Chiang about Luke’s whereabouts. “At this point in the story, thirty years after the fall of the Empire, Luke has gone to a dark place. He always had this potential dark side within him, being that his father was Darth Vader. So he is really struggling with that,” he said.

Luke’s planned storyline eventually hit the big screen without any major changes.

Let’s Go To War

The Last Jedi nearly tore Star Wars fans apart when it dropped in theaters. Message boards and social media were split on whether or not the film lived up to the hype. Regardless, the film earned $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of 2017.

Fans will be waiting for the finale of the new Star Wars trilogy with Episode 9. That film is slated to be released on December 20, 2019.
