Fans of HBO’s Westworld fell in love with the show’s dynamic characters and gripping storylines. For the first two seasons, however, many were confused about where the story actually took place. With season three’s premiere, fans finally learn the location of the park. As expected, there are huge spoilers here.
Uniting Two Worlds
In the premiere episode “Parce Domine,” Bernard is seen looking for Westworld. When he approaches a fisherman, he gives them cash for the park’s whereabouts. In one shot, people can see a sign reading “Palawan Island.” This means the park is located in the real-life Philippines region. In the original film, the location of the park wasn’t mentioned. When working on the HBO show, showrunner Jonathan Nolan had some questions about the park’s location. “I remember when [executive producer J.J. Abrams] called after watching the original film. In my memory, I conflated that hovercraft sequence when they arrive in the park with the space-hotel with 2001. And I said to J.J., ‘Is that park even on this planet?'” He told the story to Entertainment Weekly. “The important thing for us was, when you come to the series you have no idea where you are. Disneyland is in a parking lot in Anaheim but it’s spectacular and you forget where you are when you’re inside.”
It’s Nowhere Near the Stars
Since the first season, fans have speculated about the park’s whereabouts. One of the biggest theories is that the park is located on an alien planet. Unfortunately, this was debunked through several moments in the show. In the season two premiere “Journey Into Night,” the park was greeted by a member of the Chinese government. If that’s not enough, the hosts are sent to China to get some interest from investors. During this episode, fans also discover the park is located on an island.
Better Call Paul
While Westworld has sent fans all over Reddit, the third season is slated to be less confusing. “This…season is a little less of a guessing game and more of an experience, with the hosts finally getting to meet their makers,” Nolan told Entertainment Weekly. The series also finds some new blood with Aaron Paul. In the show, the Emmy-winning actor portrays construction worker Caleb Nichols. “Aaron Paul is a terrific actor. We had early conversations about trying to work with him when we were putting the pilot together, so this is a little bit of unfinished business. I think in terms of finding someone to stick up for the human side of the equation, you simply could not do any better,” Nolan also told Entertainment Weekly.
For Paul, one of the most challenging things about the show was its schedule. “Jonah said, ‘look, the future looks better at night,’ so most of our stuff was shot at night. We did have some day stuff, so Mondays were our daytime shoots. On Tuesdays, we’d be into splits, so our call times would be at 2:00 p.m., and then we would wrap around 2:00 a.m.,” Paul told Collider. “And then, by Wednesday or Thursday, our call times weren’t until 6:00 p.m. and we’d wrap around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. So, to go back and forth on that schedule for six months is pretty brutal.”
Fans will be glued to their screens for what happens next on Westworld. Unlike previous seasons, this season will only feature eight episodes instead of 10. With a shorter season, fans can expect things to move at a stronger pace. While a fourth season hasn’t been confirmed, many believed it’s bound to happen. With 43 Emmy nominations for Westword so far, the current season will only increase its popularity tremendously during awards season.
