‘Limetown’ Podcast Adaptation Gains Jessica Biel In Lead Role

Published

on

Recently, podcasts have been seeing a lot more attention from Hollywood. While it seems peculiar for many, this only equates to big bucks for studios. Another podcast is getting a live-action treatment, and a Golden Globe nominee has been attached.

Another Facebook Production

Jessica Biel will star in the upcoming Limetown drama series produced by Facebook. This show is based on the 2015 podcast of the same name. The podcast’s first season saw ten million downloads, which sparked interest for a live action series.

USA

Biel will play the role of American Public Radio journalist Lia Haddock. With over 300 people disappearing from a Tennessee research facility, Haddock must discover the truth behind it all. Biel recently earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for her work on The Sinner.

Tapping Into The Medium

The growth of live action series based on podcasts started with Serial. When the investigative journalism podcast landed a TV deal, other studios started seeking out podcasts. “We knew that listening to a four- or five-hour podcast would paint a more accurate picture of what a story could look like as a TV or movie than a script would,” Wondery Podcast Network CEO Hernan Lopez told The Hollywood Reporter.

HBO

Aside from Serial and Limetown, 2 Dope Queens and Pod Save America also landed TV deals.

The Great Comeback

With the forthcoming TV project in the works, Limetown will see a bigger audience for season two. The second season was announced last Halloween. This is the long awaited follow up to its first season, which was released back in 2015.

Powerhouse Arena

Limetown co-creator Skip Bronkie believes podcasts shouldn’t be considered a novelty anymore. “There are a lot of seriously talented people in this space now that are doing seriously talented work. It’s not just a casual thing that you can dismiss,” he told Variety.
