In her new memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me, and with excerpts published by The Daily Mail, Lily lets it all out for the world to read. In her letter, she writes, “We all make choices and, although I don’t excuse some of yours, at the end of the day we can’t rewrite the past,” she wrote. “I’m learning how to accept your actions and vocalise how they made me feel. I accept and honour the sadness and anger I felt toward the things you did or didn’t do, did or didn’t give me.”

She goes on to admit, “Because my dad was often gone, I never wanted to do anything that would make him stay away even longer. I became extra careful about what I said and how I said it, afraid he’d think I was angry or didn’t love him. And the truth is, I was angry. I missed him and wanted him there.”

Within a section of her book titled, “A Letter to All Dads,” she explains that her father and his second wife at the time, Jill Tavelman, divorced when she was only five years old. Her father then “moved from our home in England to Switzerland, where he stayed for more than twenty years.”

Lily admitted that although she believed her father had always loved her, their estranged relationship affected her in serious ways. Writing, “I’ve realized that many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad. It’s taken me over a decade to resolve some of them (others I’m still resolving) and to finally build up the courage to speak my mind to him.”

Lily’s reasoning behind authoring a book such as this, and letting the world in on the rocky relationship with her father has been nothing but pure. She hopes to inspire and motivate young women. In her letter, she invites Phil to see the new woman she has become.

“There’s still so much time to move forward. And I want to. I’m inviting you to join me,” she concludes. “I’ll always be your little girl.”
