When it comes to Lady Gaga, nothing is impossible. The NYC native has sold over 146 million singles and earned a Golden Globe for American Horror Story: Hotel. She’s also busy selling out arenas around the world. Now, she’s slated to do something she’s never done before: Broadway.

Hello, Gorgeous

Rosie O’Donnell revealed that a Broadway revival of Funny Girl was currently in the works. She also stated that Lady Gaga will play Fanny Brice. O’Donnell will play her mother, Rose. This announcement went down during a show with Randy Rainbow at the Paramount Theater in New York.

Born This Way

There’s no secret how much Lady Gaga adores Barbra Streisand. Their careers are practically identical. Much like Gaga, Streisand started out as a singer with hits such as “People” and “The Way We Were.” In 1968, she broke into Hollywood with Funny Girl, which gained her an Oscar for Best Actress. Streisand also played the same role in the original 1963 musical.

Different But The Same

Their connection runs a bit deeper than similar backgrounds. Lady Gaga has been gaining buzz for her performance in A Star Is Born. Her portrayal of singer Ally has earned a plethora of Oscar talk. Streisand played singer Esther in the 1976 version of the film. Streisand won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and Best Original Song.

Another Chance At Broadway

In 2012, a Broadway revival of Funny Girl was announced. Unfortunately, it was put on the shelf due to money problems. “Given the current economic climate, many Broadway producing investors have found it impossible to maintain their standard level of financial commitment,” producer Bob Boyett said in a press release.

Music On The Mind

While news of Gaga taking over an iconic role sounds great, it hasn’t been confirmed just yet. With the rise of her acting career, it wouldn’t be long before she does hit the Broadway stage. While she’s basking in A Star Is Born‘s success, Gaga is currently working on her new studio album. In late December, she’ll begin her two year concert residency in Las Vegas, titled Lady Gaga Enigma.
