Kevin Smith Begins Pre-Production Work On Upcoming ‘Jay And Silent Bob Reboot’

It’s hard to avoid hearing news of reboots wherever you go these days. Many studios feel reboots can find a brand new audience. Critics tend to write them off as a cheap way to cash in on a beloved property. For one director, though, he’s doing it for the laughs.

Kicking Off The New Year

In 2017, director Kevin Smith revealed plans to do a reboot of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Unlike other reboots, this one has a unique take. The film, which is titled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, finds Smith poking fun at the influx of reboots. “It’s a movie that makes fun of sequels and remakes and reboots while being all three at the same time,” he told The Daily Beast.

Twitter

On New Year’s Day, he posted a photo of himself and producer Jordan Monsanto doing pre-production work.  “@JayMewes took this pic of me and @JordanMonsanto to both mark the moment and to document that we were the only dopes in Hollywood working on the holiday,” he said on Twitter.

Flipping The Script

Released in 2001, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back featured a long list of cameo appearances. This was originally supposed to end Smith’s View Askewniverse film universe. The two characters would return in the 2006 film Clerks 2.

Smith’s real life weight loss was a strong factor in some script changes for the upcoming film. “This is the eighth draft of the script and at this point, it’s weird, this is the draft where I had to take out all the fat jokes ’cause they just don’t make sense anymore,” he said on his Fatman on Batman podcast. His weight loss was the result of a heart attack back in February 2018.

A Super Director

Recently, Smith has kept himself busy with The CW’s Arrowverse. He’s been directing a handful of Supergirl and The Flash episodes. “These gigs to me, I love them to death. I get to exercise any impulse I have to be involved in the caped action and drama,” he told Variety.

Aside from Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Smith will be working on Killroy Was Here and Moose Jaws.
