Kevin Smith wouldn’t be where he is without his 1994 directorial debut Clerks. The movie launched the career of one of cinema’s most beloved indie directors. Over a decade after Clerks 2, Smith revealed a third Clerks film, long-rumored to happen, is once again in the works.
Return To Where It All Began
On Facebook, Smith shared an image of himself, Jason Mewes, and Jeff Anderson hanging out together. The New Jersey native discussed how Clerks 3 will deliver the perfect ending for the trilogy. “It’ll be a movie that concludes a saga. It’ll be a movie about how you’re never too old to completely change your life. It’ll be a movie about how a decades-spanning friendship finally confronts the future. It’ll be a movie that brings us back to the beginning – a return to the cradle of civilization in the great state of #newjersey,” Smith said on Facebook.
Clerks 3 has been on Smith’s radar since Clerks 2 was released. In 2012, the director wanted to turn Clerks 3 into a Broadway play. The inspiration for the switch came after seeing Seminar on Broadway. “I’m sitting here watching [Seminar], and all those nights we would sit in Quick Stop and rehearse Clerks, this is exactly what it was like,” Smith told Broadway.com. “That’s the only way I know how to direct. I’d never made a movie before, but I’d been in high school plays, so we kind of put it up like a play. So for Clerks 3 to be a play, to me, would make more sense.”
Patching Things Up
In 2013, Smith was almost finished with the script for Clerks 3. Unfortunately, the film couldn’t go anywhere due to Anderson opting out of it. “You need four people to make a Clerks movie. For a while, one of the clerks did not want to be involved. I wrote the script, he dug the script, he was just like, ‘Yeah, don’t wanna do it,’” Smith said in a 2018 episode of Fatman on Batman.
Instead of doing the film without Anderson, Smith hoped the actor could change his mind. “I want it so badly, but I can’t do it without him, it was written for him. But the Randal part is the whole movie like it’s Randal’s flick. So unless he changes his mind — if and when he changes his mind, I doubt that’ll happen — then we can kind of move forward. I could never recast it, he is Randal,” Smith said in the same episode. The high school friends began working together on Clerks. Anderson reprised his role as Randal Graves in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2. Fortunately, the two managed to patch things up. “After mending fences with @benaffleck earlier this year, I was hoping for a chance to do the same with Jeff – so huge thanks to Leeloo Multiprops for getting us all in the same room. But the biggest thanks ever go to Jeff, for being receptive to the idea at all,” Smith said in his Facebook post.
Smith decided to scrap the Clerks 3 script and start over. “This won’t be the old script we almost made a few years back: this is a completely new screenplay that I just started writing last night,” Smith also said on Facebook.
What’s Next For Smith?
Clerks 3 will be the only film on Smith’s plate for the foreseeable future. The director is currently doing press for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Releasing on October 15, the movie serves as both a sequel and a reboot. In the film, Jay and Silent Bob must stop a reboot of Bluntman and Chronic from happening. The film will feature frequent collaborators Brian O’Halloran, Jason Lee, and Ben Affleck.
Following Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Smith has Killroy Was Here on the horizon. Shot back in 2018, the horror anthology features Harley Quinn Smith (Smith’s own daughter), Chris Jericho, and Azita Ghanizada. No release date has been confirmed for Killroy Was Here yet.
