How Keanu Reeves Overcame His Dark Past

pre-fame facts

We all know and love Keanu Reeves from The Matrix Trilogy, but how much do we really know about him? The notoriously private actor has actually had a difficult life, but he’s prevailed over any obstacle with style and grace. From losing his best friend to dealing with multiple home invasions, Keanu has always persevered. Read on to find out how Keanu overcame his dark past.

Never Surrender

When the Speed actor was only two years old, his father stepped out on his family. But that didn’t stop young Keanu, whose mom apparently worked very hard to keep them afloat. His father was allegedly locked up during his childhood, and Keanu appeared to be deeply impacted by his father’s absence. In fact, he even told Rolling Stone that “The story with me and my dad’s pretty heavy. It’s full of pain and woe.” Despite his past, Reeves has successfully channeled his “heavy” feelings into his stellar acting abilities. #Winning!

One surprising fact about Keanu’s life is that he had to deal with the death of his bestie, River Phoenix. The Telegraph reported that the duo became acquainted while filming I Love You To Death, growing closer on the set of My Own Private Idaho. When Reeves was asked about the loss of his friend in 1993, he told Rolling Stone that “I enjoyed his company. Very much. And enjoyed his mind and his spirit and his soul. We brought good out in each other. He was a real original thinker. He was not the status quo. In anything.”

That’s not the only tragedy that the stoic actor has had to endure. Fans of Reeves would be shocked to find out that he’s stayed strong during one of the most challenging times in his life: losing his baby girl and his girlfriend within a two year period. PEOPLE magazine claimed that Keanu’s relationship with Jennifer Syme in the ’90s led to her having a miscarriage with their child, Ava. While the media outlet reported that the death of their child ended their relationship, it also stated that Syme passed away in a car accident in 2001. About the loss of Ava and Jennifer, Reeves told Parade magazine that “Grief changes shape, but it never ends.”

Bring It On

But Keanu has shined through the darkness of his past and hopes to have a family again soon. In 2006, he revealed to Parade that “I’m trying not to be alone so much. And man, it’s a struggle. I want to get married. I want to have kids. That’s at the top of the mountain. I’ve got to climb the mountain first. I’ll do it. Just give me some time.” You’ve got all the time in the world, Keanu!

The John Wick star has always been extremely private and has kept his personal growth just that – personal. Even fellow show business veterans who have worked with Keanu over the years claim that they barely know him. His Constantine castmate Shia LaBeouf told TIME magazine that, “I’ve worked with him for a year and a couple of months, but I don’t really know him that much.” He hilariously added that “I don’t think he hangs out with other humans that much.” Director Francis Lawrence agreed with LaBeouf, saying “Do I really know Keanu after working with him? No. I know things about him: he’s hardworking, he’s generous, he’s a sweet, sweet guy. But it’s all just sort of on the surface.” Apparently, he’s the strong and silent type!

Born To Win

How can Keanu retain his air of mystery when he’s one of Hollywood’s hottest stars? According to the talented actor, it’s all about not oversharing the details of his life. In 2005, he told TIME that “I’m not interested in showing anybody what’s behind the curtain.” He elaborated, “I like watching a good documentary about how something was made. I just don’t want it to be my life.” Very well said!

So it’s no surprise that Reeves didn’t say a word when he underwent two home invasions within days of each other. Similar to the plot of his film Knock Knock, Reeves really did experience two random women showing up at his door – they just appeared at different times. The first incident occurred in September 2014, when TMZ stated that Reeves was asleep in his home and heard some strange noises. Allegedly, he then confronted the strange woman he found chilling in his chair, who replied that “she was there to meet him.” The crazy woman was reportedly taken away to a mental hospital after the eternally calm actor dialed 9-1-1.

Mere days later, TMZ divulged that Reeves was the victim of another break-in. Thankfully, he reportedly wasn’t on the premises at the time, but his staff was there to hold down the fort for him. This time, TMZ dished that the psychotic fan snuck into his house through an open gate, took a shower, and even took a swim before Keanu’s crew figured out she was there. Unfortunately for her, Keanu’s team allegedly gave him a call, and he was forced to contact the police again. Supposedly, this second woman was also escorted to the mental hospital. While the enchanting thespian has faced his fair share of tragedy, he’s always tackled it head-on. We’re excited to see what Keanu does next!
