Kathleen Kennedy To Be Lucasfilm President Until 2021

The recent Star Wars films have seen a split amongst longtime fans. Despite the online talk, the films have earned over $2 billion at the box office combined. Fortunately, one of the main people behind it all will be sticking around a little bit longer.

Three More Years

Kathleen Kennedy has extended her contract as president of Lucasfilm for another three years. Kennedy became president in 2012 after Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4 billion.

She got her start as the co-founder of Amblin Entertainment with her husband Frank Marshall and Steven Spielberg. During her time with the company, she produced hits such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, and the original Jurassic Park trilogy. Along with her husband, Kathleen co-founded the The Kennedy/Marshall Company, which produced The Sixth Sense and Munich.

Future Franchise Projects

While her stay lasts until 2021, the Star Wars film calendar looks empty aside from Episode IX. Obviously, this doesn’t mean future films haven’t been in the works. Rian Johnson and the team of David Benioff and D. B. Weiss will be working on their own separate film trilogies. While there have been several anthology films being planned out, the lukewarm response to Solo might put those on the shelf.

Lucasfilm

Many T.V. shows are currently in production as well. The Mandalorian, which arrives in 2019, will be part of Disney’s forthcoming streaming service. Jon Favreau is slated to write the series.

Boosting Ticket Sales

Whether fans like her or not, Kennedy has been an essential factor in the Star Wars franchise. The Force Awakens became the highest grossing film in North America, as fans were eager to see the story’s continuation.

While the George Lucas’s prequels earned some cash, they were often seen as incomplete. With more characters to play with, it’ll be exciting to see where Kennedy takes the franchise before her contract ends.
