Kanye West fans were disappointed after his long-awaited gospel album, Jesus is King, was delayed after its announced release date. However, the rapper has unveiled much bigger plans for the album. An IMAX movie documenting the process of creating the album is set to be released this October!
Jesus Is King
While at listening parties for the gospel album in Detroit and his hometown Chicago, West gave audiences a sneak peek of the film. It highlights one of the artist’s popular Sunday Services that he held in the Painted Desert of Arizona this past summer. It took place in the Roden Crater, an art installation from renowned artist James Turrell.
The upcoming film will also include songs arranged by West in the gospel tradition alongside music from the actual album.“This one-of-a-kind experience features songs arranged by West in the gospel tradition along with music from his new album Jesus Is King — all presented in the immersive sound and stunning clarity of IMAX,” IMAX said of the film in a statement. Jesus Is King: A Kanye West Film will premiere exclusively in IMAX theaters worldwide on Friday, Oct. 25. Fans still do not know when West will release the full-length album, which was originally set to be released on September 27.
The first mention of the artist’s now famed Sunday Service was made by his wife, Kim Kardashian West, in January 2019. “Our new Sunday Service is starting,” the entrepreneur tweeted, regularly sharing clips from rehearsals and the actual services. West began holding the services near his home in Calabasas, CA, Rather than a traditional church service, Sunday Service is more of a weekly jam service with an incredible, 100-plus person choir singing gospel songs and reworkings of secular music.
The services have been attended by the Kardashian clan as well as other big names including Teyana Taylor, David Letterman, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Busy Phillipps and many more. The service has gotten so big, in fact, that it was featured during weekend two of Coachella 2019 on Easter weekend. The performance featured Chance the Rapper, Kid Cudi, Ty Dolla $ign and dozens of other musicians, singers, and dancers in front of an audience of over 50,000 people.
Though Sunday Service has gotten some rave reviews, it hasn’t been met without its share of controversy. Christian activists have called West out for his seemingly blasphemous use of religious iconography and profiting off of God. “People who follow Christ sense something is not right with this scene,” said Charlene Kaleina, a 68-year-old Christian, stated in a recent interview with the New York Post.
Take Them To Church
In spite of any opinions, West seems to be driven in his own faith in God and continuing Sunday Services for the masses. He has also expressed excitement to share that faith and his personal growth with this upcoming album and film. “I came to know the truth and joy of Jesus. This album is an expression of the gospel,” the artist stated at a recent event in New York. In fact, it was also reported that the artist announced that he will no longer make secular music, but will focus solely on creating gospel music from here on out.
West is so passionate about his faith and sharing it with others that he is reportedly considering starting his own church with his own twist. “It wouldn’t be the traditional, 3-hymns-and-a-sermon thing,” an unnamed source told PEOPLE about the idea. “Instead, it would be a way to point people to Jesus through the arts and through a community of people who love and care for each other. He also wants his kids to be raised in faith, and the best way for him to do that is to live out his faith.”
