Kanye West Gets Honest About Being Diagnosed With A “Mental Condition” At 39

Published

on

Since bursting onto the scene as one of the defining rappers of the 2000s, Kanye West has faced no shortage of controversy. In recent months, West’s candid commentary made headlines yet again when he voiced political and racial opinions that seemed to be an intense departure from views he had expressed in the past.

Kanye Speaks Out

The surprising nature of these statements led some fans to question the musician’s psychological well-being. While reality star, Kim Kardashian, was quick to shut down the presumption that her husband is unwell, Kanye himself had more to say on the matter.

This week, West opened up about his tumultuous history of (very public) outbursts and breakdowns in a rare interview. The star briefly stripped away his larger-than-life persona to ponder the privileges he, as a wealthy, successful artist, has been afforded when it comes to dealing with mental health issues.

Checking His Privilege

“Think about people that have mental issues that are not Kanye West, that can’t go and make that and make it feel like it’s all good,” he prompted. This comment becomes all the more poignant in the wake of the release of his latest music, much of which has earned critical praise in spite of his recent controversies.

“Think about somebody that does exactly what I did at TMZ and they just do that at work, but then Tuesday morning they come in, they lost their job and they can’t go back and make that. That’s why God put that on me at age 40.”

Flipping The Narrative

“I had never been diagnosed ’til I was like 39 years old,” ‘Ye said, clarifying, “diagnosed with a mental condition.”

“I think everybody got something,” Kanye West continued, “But, like I said on the album, it’s not a disability, it’s a superpower.”
