‘Justice League’ Director Steps Down in Light of Family Tragedy

“Justice League” director Zack Snyder announced he will no longer be part of the film’s production following a family tragedy: his 20-year-old daughter, Autumn, took her own life back in March.

He added that he “never planned to make this public. I thought it would just be in the family, a private matter, our private sorrow that we would deal with. When it became obvious that I need to take a break, I knew there would be narratives created on the Internet. They’ll do what they do. The truth is… I’m done caring about that kind of thing right now.”

“In my mind, I thought it was a cathartic thing to go back to work, to just bury myself and see if that was the way through it,” Snyder said. “The demands of this job are pretty intense. It is all consuming. And in the last two months, I’ve come to the realization… I’ve decided to take a step back from the movie to be with my family, be with my kids, who really need me. They are all having a hard time. I’m having a hard time.”

Snyder’s 20-year-old daughter committed suicide in March while attending Sarah Lawrence College. She enjoyed writing and even created the Write-A-Thon To End Homelessness For Mothers and Their Children charity in 2014.

“I want the movie to be amazing and I’m a fan, but that all pales pretty quickly in comparison,” he concluded. “I know the fans are going to be worried about the movie but there are seven other kids that need me. In the end, it’s just a movie. It’s a great movie. But it’s just a movie.”

“Avengers” director Joss Whedon will take over for Snyder and direct additional scenes that he has written for “Justice League.” They will be shot in London this summer before the film is released on November 17, 2017. Snyder recently screened a rough cut of the highly anticipated superhero flick for those in his inner circle. He decided the project needed some tweaking, thus, bringing Whedon on board.

Warner Bros. president Toby Emmerich has since given his and his studios’ condolences to the Snyder family, and elaborated on the direction that the film his heading.

“The directing is minimal and it has to adhere to the style and tone and template that Zack set,” Emmerich said. “We’re not introducing any new characters. It’s the same characters in the same scenes. He’s handing a baton to Joss but the course has really been set by Zack. I still believe that despite this tragedy, we’ll still end up with a great movie.”

Snyder gained widespread acclaim for his 2007 film adaptation of Frank Miller’s 1998 limited comic series “300.” He later adapted for the screen Alan Moore’s 1986-87 limited comic series, “Watchmen,” in 2009. Snyder has been on thin ice with comic book and movie fans since 2016’s arguably disappointing release of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Prior to directing “The Avengers” in 2012 and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015, Whedon was best known for creating “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the short-lived TV series “Firefly.” He will not be directing “Avengers: Infinity War,” which is slated to hit theaters on May 4, 2018.
