It has been a long seven years since the last installment in the Sherlock Holmes franchise premiered. Fortunately, with Robert Downey Jr.’s role in the Marvel universe winding down, the film’s stars are now returning for a third edition in the series. Its premiere date is set for Christmas 2020.

Jude Law Reveals What Fans Can Expect

Jude Law, who will reprise his role as Watson, recently sat down for an interview on the matter. The British actor had quite a bit to say about the upcoming film’s plot, particularly the dynamic between his character and Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes.

“We hope to propel the story forward,” he explained. “As always, the essence of the story is their codependency. We’re going to examine—since it’s been several years since we’ve seen them—we’re going to play up the fact that they haven’t seen each other for a long time either.”

The Film’s Star Weighs In

Jude Law isn’t the only Sherlock Holmes actor who has spoken about the franchise’s return. Robert Downey Jr. has revealed that the process of shooting the series was extremely demanding, once joking that “If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies.”

Since his schedule has become more relaxed, Downey has been quite enthusiastic about his return as the titular character. He recently tweeted a GIF of himself captioned “Practicing my Sherlock face.”

The One Character Who Will Be Missing

While most of the cast appears to be making a comeback, there is one major character who likely won’t be included—iconic villain Professor Moriarty.

“I think the last iteration when they last wrote a screenplay for Sherlock Holmes 3, Moriarty wasn’t in it,” confirmed Jarred Harris, who played the villain in the first two films.
