DC Films is asking you to “put on a happy face” with its upcoming film, Joker. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the film is focusing on the Joker’s twisted backstory. Maybe he wasn’t born evil. Perhaps society turned him into the villain. Nevertheless, Joker is one movie you won’t want to miss in 2019.
Focusing On The Joker
Batman may be the star of other DC Films, but Joker isn’t about Batman, hence the title. While we will see Bruce Wayne, as a child, the film is about the Joker and the world that made him. He’s the rightful protagonist of his own movie, and to many fans, it’s about time we learn more about the villain.
Batman movies aren’t usually described as “psychological thrillers” but that’s what Joker is: a psychological thriller and character study of Gotham City’s villain. What happened to the Joker during his youth? Was he betrayed? If so, by whom? What’s going on beneath the surface?
Joaquin Phoenix’s Incredible Performance
Joaquin Phoenix is one of the most seasoned and talented actors in the industry. Yes, he has big shoes to fill (Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, for example), but if there’s anyone who’s capable of bringing a new dimension to the Joker, it’s Phoenix.
The actor has won a Golden Globe Award (for Walk the Line) and has been nominated for three Academy Awards. He can play any role and he does so with a creative vision, passion, and drive unlike anyone else. We know Phoenix will perform well as the Joker, but we might be surprised with his unique interpretive choices. They won’t disappoint.
Watch The Trailer
In April 2019, the first full-length trailer was released for fans. The gritty, enigmatic trailer has everyone’s imaginations running wild. Why is the Joker walking down Arkham Asylum’s antiseptic hallways, clutching a bouquet? How does the Wayne family play a role in the movie? Are we supposed to feel sorry for the Joker?
The answer is yes. You should feel sorry for the Joker. With most villain-focused films, we learn villains have another side to their character. They’re not “bad” people at birth. Instead, society turns them into villains. Be sure to watch the Joker’s unique story, released in theaters on October 4, 2019.
