John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight Returns 2019

Published

on

HBO revealed the anticipated return of the satirical late night news show to be February 17, 2019. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returns for its 6th season, hopefully rising to its highest levels of acclaim as it continues to win awards each season. While there are more than enough late night news shows to watch, John Oliver’s is one of the most widely praised.

The Beginnings

Last Week Tonight is the only weekly news program to air on Sunday night, and began in 2014. John Oliver became a famous correspondent on another satirical news program, The Daily Show with John Stewart. He gained more recognition when he filled John Stewart’s role while he was filming a movie.

Variety

Oliver’s hosting of The Daily Show drew fans, and it was not much longer before HBO signed a deal with him.

Acclaim for Last Week Tonight

Since then, Oliver’s show has accumulated 12 Primetime Emmys. Most recently, it took home four Emmys in 2018, including one for Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the third year in a row. The show has also been bestowed awards from Critics’ Choice, Peabody, and Writers Guild.

Screen Rant

The show has covered topics from Brexit to tobacco to crisis pregnancy centers. Oliver also deep dives into pieces on more overlooked topics like the disenfranchisement of convicted felons, cryptocurrencies, and the Brazilian presidential election.

Season Six of Last Week Tonight

As the political divide seems to widen, Oliver provides more than a rehash of the previous week’s issues, news, and scandals. His biggest fans will want to see more of his deep dives, which provide a look into underreported or underserved issues. He’ll be doing at least 30 this season, one for each episode.

Screen Rant

Last Week Tonight season six premieres Sunday, February 17 at 11PM exclusively on HBO. The episodes are also available on HBO GO, HBO NOW, HBO On Demand, and affiliate portals.
