John Oliver Isn’t Impressed by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner

Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, are often portrayed in the media as the moderating forces within President Donald Trump’s administration.

“If Trump is thinking about pressing a button labeled ‘NUKE EARTH,’ they will – one behalf of all of us – guide his hand towards the button labeled ‘HEY MAYBE DON’T,’” John Oliver said on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight.

Perhaps, in an attempt for some sort of stability, nervous liberals have simply accepted this image of the couple as centrist figures, for which there’s no real evidence of.

Oliver began his main story of the night by referring to Ivanka and Jared as “American’s William and Kate, except, in this case, both of them are attractive.”

He then focused on Ivanka, who has been praised for her alleged concern for childcare reform and women’s rights, while also being criticized for not speaking out against her father’s controversial travel ban. Saturday Night Live recently had some fun with this.

Earlier this month, CBS’ Gale King asked Ivanka about her role as a supposed moral compass for the White House. “I think most of the impact I have, over time most people will not actually know about,” she said.

“Oh, well that’s convenient,” Oliver responded to Ivanka’s ambiguous comment. “So we should just give her credit when good stuff happens and then blame others when bad stuff happens? That’s not a job description of a political advisor, that’s a description of an Old Testament God.”

Oliver maintained that Ivanka’s “poised and restrained” demeanor is actually part of a calculated strategy to sway public opinion in her favor.

“She’s been trained in the art of Trump branding to be as vague and as likable as possible so that everyone can plausibly think that she shares their values, whether or not that’s actually true,” Oliver said.

He also highlighted an excerpt from Ivanka’s 2009 book The Trump Card that seems to verify this.

“Perception is more important than reality. If someone perceives something to be true, it is more important than if it is in fact true. This doesn’t mean you should be duplicitous, but don’t go out of your way to correct a false assumption if it plays to your advantage.”

Oliver later asked what makes Kushner qualified for his laundry list of White House duties, such as solving the opiate epidemic, making peace in the Middle East, and revamping the federal government. For someone whose voice could sound like Gilbert Gottfried for all we know, these are some pretty big tasks.

Oliver insisted that his segment wasn’t an attack on the couple themselves. “I don’t know enough about them to eviscerate them, just as you don’t know enough about them to justify putting any real hopes in them,” he said. “If they are the reason you are sleeping at night, you should probably still be awake.”
