Will Joaquin Phoenix And Robert Pattinson Meet In New Batman Movie?

Joaquin Phoenix

The upcoming Joker is already being hailed by critics, with many singling out the performance by Joaquin Phoenix. His nuanced portrayal of one of pop culture’s most famous supervillains is set to stand out from the field of formulaic superhero movies in a big way. But fans can’t help but wonder… will Phoenix face Robert Pattinson’s Batman, either in this film or another?

Joaquin Phoenix Makes Big Impression On DC Fans

After great success with his 2016 drama War Dogs, Todd Phillips was asked to join the DCEU team and direct the 2019 Joker film. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a failed comedian who takes on a new, troubling persona that eventually swallows him whole. The movie premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31st, and will open in theatres October 4th.

The box office premiere will undoubtedly rake in millions, as Joker is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. Phoenix was rumored to have prepared extensively for the role, losing weight and diving deep into the psychology of the Joker in an intense bout of method acting. However, fans predict it will pay off in the long run, as he is already getting media attention as a potential Academy Award nominee for the role. With such positive press, it’s no wonder that fans are urging DC to recruit Phoenix for their next Batman project with Robert Pattinson.

Many Think Pattinson Will Be The Best Batman Yet

Robert Pattinson is a controversial casting choice for the DCEU. While the talented actor is best known for his early work in the Twilight series, he has played many meaty roles since his younger years. Pattinson was pitted against several other actors but was eventually chosen due to his unbeatable audition. Director Matt Reeves is incredibly excited to work with Pattinson on a younger, mysterious, and ultimately unprecedented Batman rendition. Even Christian Bale, who portrayed the character during The Dark Knight trilogy, says he thinks Pattinson will be a good, interesting casting choice for Batman. Bale’s performance in The Dark Knight is considered the best modern Batman portrayal by many, especially during his screen time with the legendary Heath Ledger Joker. But, will Pattinson and Joaquin Phoenix make the next incredible Batman-Joker duo? Todd Phillips weighed in on the subject, but his answer was a bit of a disappointment.

Will Phoenix And Pattinson See Screen Time Together In Next Batman Film?

In an interview with Variety about Joker and his plans for future franchise releases, Phillips was faced with that very question. When asked point-blank whether he would take on a Pattinson-Phoenix Batman project, the director promptly responded, “No, definitely not!” His goal for the 2019 film was to spotlight the tumultuous history of the Joker before he ever interacted with Batman. As Pattinson is also playing a younger version of his character, the timelines would likely not add up for them to share any screen time in the future.

However, Phillips is confident that fans will see more of the Joker in the coming years. He told Variety, “Oddly, in the states, comic books are our Shakespeare it seems, and you can do many many versions of Hamlet. There will be many more jokers, I’m sure, in the future.” While Phillips seems confident in the return of the Joker character, it seems unlikely that the two talented actors will be able to perform together. However, as the DCEU evolves, there may be fresh ideas and storylines that will bring Phoenix’s Joker and Pattinson’s Batman in closer contact. Watch for updates on Matt Reeves‘ Batman movie in 2020, and see Joker in theaters October 4th.
